i think most of us are walking contradictions.
I hate this as im reading my own post and it fucking confuses me, i just can't get what im trying to say out then i get unsure what it is exactly i am trying to say. I personally didn't get bothered about what mel gibson said about the jews as i kinda agree what he means but for different reaosns to him.
I believe religion is behind all the wars and whatever in the world but good old mel just stuck it to the jews when he should know his own religion is also one of the worst for commiting evil in the name of god.
also i love it when a good comedian takes the piss outta white folk or black folk but it does tend to get to the point wheres its only the black/not white comedians can get away with it. I mean the chapelle show for me hit the two really well ripping into blacks/white and whatever else he could with great effect.
Paul Mooney:
Tom Cruise is the last samurai, give me a break. I got a movie for ya, the last nigger on the planet starring Tom Hanks.
Not word for word but funny as fuck.

Everyone that worries about racism and loves to throw the word around is a twat. If Kramer was burning crosses outside people's houses, that would be one thing. He wasn't. He was having a little rant at a heckler. Wow.
Isn't it funny how most people who will point something out as racist are knee-jerk-overreacting white folk? There used to be a thing called the "White man's burden". Nowadays, though, we have a thing called the "white man's guilt".
I suppose bringing this back to sitcoms... "Love Thy Neighbour" anyone? I've never seen it myself.

One of my exes used to do stand up and he got hecklers everytime he went on stage-it goes with the territory. Got to give it to the arsehole (I'm bitter :-) ), his comebacks were way, way better than this rant! Worse thing about this is not that it exposes him as a racist (doubt that he is), but it just not smart. In terms of being dodgy and funny, it's hardly up there with Russel Brand's 'that's what they said about Hitler and he was alright' is it? Jill :-)

oh no im gonna get ripped apart for this one but it seems to be ok for dave chappelle, chris rock and any other brother to go around calling who they want a cracker or a honkey? Another thing if a black guy is pissing me off and i want to get back at him why can't i say "fuck off nigger!" if i am saying it to piss him off and insult him? Its not like i want to enslave him and his family or anything. The fact is that 'nigger' can never be said without it coming with a whole history of baggage and meaning. You can say it if you want, but it relates to slavery, oppresion, abuse, murder, segregation and more. To say nigger you are referring to all these things. As for Borat! Blimey, that's the odd thing, that there will always be people who can't see a difference. The "chocolate face" remark is hilarious, because it is shocking to hear such a stupid childish remark in an adult set-up. It is not weighted with any bad intent. The whole point of Borat is to expose the prejudice of his 'victims' in many instances. The whole "Throw the Jew Down The Well" song was done to expose the mind-set of the sing-a-long punters in that southern bar. The cleverest bits of the film turn the spotlight on the audience instead of the on screen victims. Two particular scenes spring to mind!

Michael Richards apology on Letterman:
A pretty uncomfortable clip.... especially with laughing audience at the beginning, either unaware of what happened, or just presuming Richards is 'in character' or something.

Personally, i dont want Michael Richards to be a racist, not just morally, but because it would make me uncomfortable, to be honest.however, as i said previously, that "50 years ago..." line is fucking horrible.theres insults and theres hatred, and i aint sure which side of the line he thinks or knows hes on.

Mr Coyle, love your work, generally. But does worrying about racism make you a twat?Really? Its not an issue in life? And to be classed as a racist you need to be burning crosses? Is that the point you find racism unacceptable? Just curious....

The 'rules' of stand up are: 1. If you do stand up expect to be heckled; 2) If you heckle a comedian expect to be insulted. Must say when I first viewed the clip, I thought he was trying to do the 'I'm funny because I'm totally outrageous' thing and it fell flat big time. After watching the apology, I'm not sure. On the one hand, he isn't trying to explain himself, but then again, he might have been advised (Max Clifford style) to do the damage limitation apology followed by the 'I've got issues, but I'm trying to sort myself out' thing -a la Mel Gibson.
It's a fine line between postmodern irony (everythings up for grabs) and straighforward racism, sexism, homophobia etc isn't it? I suppose the mark of the genious comedian is that he/she takes it right up to the edge, but doesn't step over? And, of course, they're funny! Think ultimately what this episodes shows is that Krammer should stick to TV.
Anyway, hope this thread doesn't go 'pear shaped' :-)
Take care,
Jill
