I just looked him up on IMDB. IMDB says he did something with the Gangs Of New York script and some other scriptwork, and that he directed a film called 'You Can Count On Me' that won some awards at Sundance. It looks pretty good. You Can Count On Me is a great little indie flick and I'd recommend it to anyone with a love for character driven films - Laura Linney, Mark Ruffalo and Matthew Brodderick give wonderful performances. Aronofsky is an exceptional filmmaker - Requiem For A Dream is one of the best films of recent years. I'm also a fan of Anderson and Gondry but would add Alexander Payne, Spike Jonze, Wes Anderson and David O Russell to the list of young filmmakers worth keeping an eye on...

I watched You Can Count On Me after reading this post, I really enjoyed it. I thought Mark Ruffalo was particularly great in it.

I'd add David Gordon Green too, though he seems to polarise opinion.

I'd add David Gordon Green too, though he seems to polarise opinion. I've not seen any of his films but remember George Washington getting raves when it was released.

I loved George Washington, theres something about the style of it that is really unique, its kind of dream-like. It reminds me a little bit of David Lynch, only its a daydream rather than a nightmare. I recommend.

That's how I'd describe Virgin Suicides and Picnic At Hanging Rock - am I on the right lines?

Companero... didn't you think 'Pi' was better than RFAD..? I hope 'The Fountain' will be everything he intended it to be when he began the project but imho it seems to have spiralled waaay out of control for a movie that looks like it could enjoy being a minor indie flick at best. I mean, really, if you were married to Rachel Weiss would you want to 'spend all day making movies' or lay in bed with said naked lady, surrounded by sushi, moonshine and a big fat reefer..? Exactly. He'll never be Kubrick - that honour may belong to Chris Cunningham - only time will tell.

I thought Pi and Requiem were both equally as great as each other. Requiem was a lot more complex technically, but then it would have had a much larger budget. Both films are great in their own way.
