What kind of tape is it Gadge? If it's not miniDV, I suppose it's either VHS or Hi8. You can get anything onto a PC, but you might have to run it from a video player that's hooked up to the computer. I've never done it myself and don't really know how to, but I'm sure some of the folks on here (RyD22 or maybe even Dave) have an idea of how to do it.
At my university they've got this big stacked machine thing where you can put a tape or disc of any kind in and transfer it to anything else. Maybe if you went to one of the local colleges or unis that have big media departments, they can put it all onto CD-R's or summat, and you can thank them in the credits. I dunno though, I'm mostly just talking out of my fat arse.

Hmm tape camera... the camera I have here is a tape (I think) and you just watch it on the tv, no idea if or how it can be hooked up to the pc to edit.... hmmm what kind of camera is it do you know? I've just realised that if there is a way for that to work then I can shoot my short movie with it instead of saving for a new one.. which I'm currently doing... Anyways I look forward to your short

There are quite a lot of products available that act as an adaptor to allow normal video tape to be captured on a PC via USB or Firewire (firewire is my connection of choice... never a dropped frame in sight!).
Check that your school/college might be able to do it. I have transferred a few VHS tapes to my PC, but I have done it via the dv input on my minidv cam... so that's no use, because if you had one of those already you wouldn't be asking!

i would highly suggest saving for a DV camera for quality reasons. however there is a way to get VHS onto pc i beleive, but it is by no means easy, unless you have one of these machine things patrickcoyle talks about, they sound expencesive, in which case you may as well get a DV camera. the thing i use to get VHS onto my mac is a DV deck, it basically plays dv tapes, but with great inputs outputs and options. I just go out from the VHS using the phono ports (reb yellow and white ones) to an AV jack (the type you use for headphones kidna thing) which goes into the DV deck, and then from the DV deck by firewire to my mac, and then i import into iMovie 4 (trhe later versions have disabled it for piracy reasons me thinks) its all reasonably simple. For this though you need a DV deck thingemy, you may as well get a DV camera for how much thats gonna cost. soo yeah thats how i do it, i ave no other suggestions. i highly recomend saving for a DV camera, well worth it in the end. i reccomend canon i've never had any problems with them, and they specialise in cameras so can be trusted i reckon. i hope this all comes together for you gadge, you have one thing that i lack, good actors! ha ha let us know when its done mate

Hi Gadge, maybe you could get a cheap digital video camera from somewhere like Ebay, just to give u an example I bought a cheap one off there the other month for £160 brand new but there are cheaper models and used ones on there.

Cheers, Allan.
