Hey you lot.... I reckon alot of you will like this short film! We recently had a short film festival where I work, and this film stood out for me as being a right corker! It mixes comedy, reality, dark drama, and surreal imaginings to great effect! www.bbc.co.uk/dna/filmnetwork/A16185729It's directed by Chris Shepherd, who some of you may have already heard of. I hadn't, but some of his other stuff looks like I might like it too..... he actually did the cartoon sketches on Big Train of the "Staring Championships".

(SPOILERS) Cheers for reminding me to check this one out, Dave. You've found a real hidden gem here! Overall, I thought it was fantastic. A nice balance of gruesomely linear storytelling and slick cinematic pyrotechnics. Loved the bit where the headbanging went double time and got set to a bit of a phat beat - well Nathan Barley The ultraviolent animation scored by the 'Picture The Loan' muzac was gleefully dark too, as was the winking Jesus moony! Billy's take on the dangers of religious propoganda was a nice mix of spookily sinister and slap-bang OTT. Nice to see you could still gob off about spiritual hokum in the 70s! ;D What was the deal with the gypsy curse?! That was a bit David Lynch (no offense, mate!). Speaking of weird directors, the sequence where Billy started launching stuff at Dennis' house reminded me of Cronenberg's 2002 effort about paranoid schizophrenia called Spider. Very bleak and twisted. In fact, Dennis is the name of the protagonist in that too! Coincidence...? The 'next-phase-of-the-cycle' conclusion gave the whole thing a nice bit of closure. I love a story with a happy ending All in all it had the rare and gentle power of a horrifcally black story that didn't take itself too seriously. If you've ever seen the 1997 film The Butcher Boy, then you'll know what I mean when I say Silence Is Golden would make a great extra feature on that film's DVD (which still hasn't been released, grrrrr). Nice find, Dave! 'The butt of a machine gun? More like his banana' ;D

Just noticed the link to another of his films on that BBC film network site. A short film called Dad's Dead..... ...and it's another corker and no mistake, but christ, it's even darker than Silence is Golden! Really horrible character. These Chris Shepherd short films remind me of Chris Cunningham stuff a little bit. I imagine that if Chris Cunningham suddenly revealed he had some real story telling talent instead of just mad imagery and editing skills, then this might be what his films would be like. Oh yeah.. here's the link to Dad's Dead: www.bbc.co.uk/dna/filmnetwork/A8659407EDIT.... I have now also spied this little clip featuring Chris Shepherd talking about the inspiration and the shoot for the film... It has spoilers, so don't watch it first! www.bbc.co.uk/dna/filmnetwork/A8979790
