Just watched it Gadge! honestly, absolutely excellent for a first film! well.. its just excellent anyway! weldone mate! First off great title scene, some shots could have been shorter though. It was a good introduction to jim's character though. I thought the voice over scene with how the two characters met was excellent great idea to do a voice over and it works brilliantly. The acting from everyone is great, so naturalistic.. and just real to be honest, they all did a great job. Some bits are comic genious **SPOILERS** line's like "it looks like a bird" ha ha and "course work?!!" ha ha ha. The TV clips where great with you and your pillow! aslo the legal weed bit.. "it's legal in jamaca, ... wales!" i was litterally Laughing out loud aty some points watching this film gadge, and thats a real acheivement. As much as it was funny, it was shocking and hard hitting. The last scene is realistic and unforgiving. Superb acting from the Kirstie Carrol when she told you about what she had done, and also when she was on the phone. The story is really good too, i think when everyone is growing up nower days they always have some sort of experiance in being pressured into something you don't wanna do, and trying to fit in with your mates just you can be "cool" and not be a loner. It's great to see a film about this, as i'm sure everyone has experianced it in someway in their lives. Bad things (and theres not many, and can easily be rectified for your next film) The sound quality was really bad, which is a shame because the dialogue is great, and i couldnt hear some of it which was a great shame. Is this the quality of the camera recording? or was it the way its compressed? i noticed the voice over bits sounded fine so i assume its the camera? Anyway i strongly reccomend you get a better camera with better sound for your next film as your films (well.. film) seem to rely heavily on dialogue. Anyway this is a technical problem and has nothing to do with your skill, so dont take it the wrong way! Also there seemed to be too many handheld shots where there should have been steady tripod shots, you do have a tripod right? because the scene at the party where the camera pans round.. that was on a tripod right? i could hear it clicking! ha ha, which is another thing to look out for. But yeah basically use a tripod more, handheld shots can be great, particually for a realistic film like this. But you do need a tripod more often then not. Also see if you can get some more proffesional looking titles on your editing program. Other than this mate, its an absolutely brilliant film that had me laughing, and feeling something for the characters. Make more!

THANKS ALOT RYD MATEY GLAD YOU LIKED IT, YEAH THE OPENING SCENE I MADE SLIGHTLY LONGER TO TRY AND GET THAT TRACK TO FIT WHEN I SHOULD OF CUT IT. ALL THE ACTORS ARE GREAT I CANT FAULT ANY OF THEM. KIRSTIE IS AN AMAZING ACTRES ISNT SHE I JUST LOVE THAT SCENE BECAUSE SHE REALLY GIVES IT HER ALL. AS FOR THE SOUND THATS DUE TO THE CAMERA ALOT THE MIC WAS TOTALLY CRAP. BUT FOR THE NEXT FILM THATS ALREADY SORTED AS WEVE BAUGHT A DV CAM AND A REALLY GOOD SONY MIC. WE HAVE A TRIPOD BUT WE ONLY BAUGHT IT LATE ON INTO THE SHOOT AS ME AND JAMIE SHELTON "JIM" SAW A NICE ONE ON HOLLIDAY AND BAUGHT IT. AND GOTTA GET SOME BETTER TITLES ON THE NEXT ONE. THANKS FOR THE COMPLIMENTS MATE IM REALLY GLAD THAT YOU LIKE IT. ALSO THANKS FOR THE WORDS OF ADVICE THEY ARE MUCH MUCH NEEDED. KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR SOME OTHER STUFF IM GUNNA BE DOING. THANKS ALOT GADGE!

I've watched it now.... and it's ace!
The camera and sound issues are pretty much irrelevant really, because you know all about them. Anyway, with performances as good as those in the film, it doesn't matter because that is what draws you in.... even if a film looks amazing, bad studenty acting is going to stink the thing up no matter what. The acting is quite stunning really throughout most of the film. Was that down to Jamie and yourself being ace directors as much as your mates being good actors. I'm presuming you had a vague structure to each scene, but left everyone to improvise as much as they liked?
A few of the scenes went on too long I thought.... like the opening. I was enjoying the opening, but then started thinking, "when is this intro going to end?" haha. You say you were keen for it to fit the length of the music at the time.... well I find that working backwards is the best policy. What I mean is, match the end of the track with the part of the film you want it to coincide with. That way you have a perfect match for where you want the musci to end with the image.... you can then take a lookk to see where you want the music to come in, and fade it in from there... or sometimes you get lucky and the beginning also matches up nice.
SPOILERS Some of the dialogue was top fun too. Loved the 'Wales' gag as Ryd pointed out... also a fave of mine was your line: "I'll try anything once... except all the gay stuff". haha Also in the same shed scene as the 'Wales' gag, I thought it showed how you were definitely more adept at improvising than Jamie(?). I liked how Jamie started the bit about Mars bars (which was a bit random to say the least), you actually started to turn that into something interesting, trying to make it work, but it didn't seem that Jamie caught onto it. I'm not slagging Jamie off at all haha... it's just that with you being such a high-flying actor type, I just thought it was noticeable the difference in improvising skills.
Anyway, bloody good stuff. Don't let the new DV cam go to your head! haha

Yeah dave's right about the quality thing, it matters the least when making a film i reckon, theres so many people out there i bet with like the best equiptment, but they make shite films. He's also right about the music nice bita fading in and stuff, getting it to the right point would work nicely. LOL the gay stuff line, hilarious.

Hiya Gadge, only just got around to checking out "Good Lad". I have to agree with Ryd & Dave as to really enjoying it. As the two lads have mentioned the technical quality is poor but the artistic quality shines through with some good performances and well observed situations. Can't wait to see what comes next. Congratulations to all involved on a mighty fine first film.
