well hello there hyde,
I made this as part of my module for st helens college (merseyside) the course..B.A tv and video production. i have to admit i didnt really learn a great from it, nor did i gain any confidence from my studies. i guess what i'm trying to say is to stay away from colleges, they are soul destroying. as for this film, i decided that it wasnt good enough to submit, and now...well i'm resitting the third year again =D. i shot fanny on a whim, using friends and family to help me out..instead of working with my fellow students =D.... (repeat colleges are bad bad bad bad bad bad idea).
thanks for taking the time to watch its really appericated.

No I liked that I liked the quality of the picture, the music, the shots etc, I REALLY liked the general dream like feel to it (carpet, felt a bit "light" if that makes sense and the water running, the bubbles very cosy) and also the kind of horror nightmare element to it. If I had made that I'd be happy with it...
I might stay on at college and do "media production" (if I can get in, I want to make a couple shorts this year so I can at least say fuck you I can do this) and if it would lead me on to make something liek this then that'd be great.
I just generally like films like this, its really lynch like and I like that. I wonder are you a lynch fan?

In terms of colour for fanny I wanted to do certain shots that look over exposed, thus informing the viewer that they had hoped into the dream world (or in fanny’s case the past). This was mainly down to the lack of dialogue in the piece so I thought it would be a cool thing to do. But the problem I found when editing it was that there was to many over exposed shots, and not enough “real” normal exposed shots. The lacking of such shots was down to the amount of time I had to film (had to use one of my friends houses as theirs looked nicer than my hovel), if memory serves me correctly we had three days to shoot the piece, which had to be done in four hour segments. Lets say it was fast paced and allot of things where missed out =D. at times I’m happy with fanny, but there other times where I’m like “it could have been ten times better”. As for the bubbles thing I have to put my hand up, it wasn’t my intention to use it as a reference for cosiness, it was supposed to be used a tool “for stress” like she couldn’t stop the water no matter how many times she tried (there’s a few shots I omitted from it which might of cleared that up). But as with all art the viewer will take what they want from certain things even if it wasn’t the person who made it intentions, which is brilliant in my opinion.
I must apologise for ones bashing of the education system if you think that you can get something out of it, the go for it, go for gold =D And yes, make as many short films as you can before you start studying (if you do decide to plan on studying the abyss known as media). Take this time to familiarize yourself with the whole process and to work out what themes work best for you. Also keep on writing, never ever stop doing that (even if you think your ideas suck). And then sir when you go into college/uni then you can go in with your head held high and proud. But yet again you may make a kick ass short and be the next best thing, thus eradicating the end for study.
As for David lynch, that bugger scared me in my younger years. My elder bother at the time though it would be funny to show my blue velvet when I was 8 years old and I still cringe when I see it to this day. I also used to watch twin peaks quite a lot back then and at the time I was oblivious to who or what made it. But in my teenaged years I did dig him quite allot, although my interest never really peaked past his successful pieces. So I guess you can say that he has influenced me somewhat and for that I hate him for it. For I’d love to make a film that just made sense =D. but yes I heart him, I love the way he intentionally fucks everything up, placing the viewer in a chaotic world for which nothing truly makes any sense….well with the first viewing anyway. =D

Bloody Lynch! Ha ha I feel like I've just been experimented on! I really like the look of the film, and all the technical aspects are great.... it's just that weird experimentalism isn't my cup of tea. Backwards imagery eh! Sneaky! With this kind of experimental stuff, people who are not 'arty' (whatever that may mean ) will invariably come away from it thinking either that the people who made it are trying to be clever dicks, or that they the viewer have been made to feel stupid because they didn't understand what went on. Either way, it doesn't lend itself well to gaining allies from regular joes. I didn't 'get it' either. Nice introductory post Andrew.... everyone likes a bit of self-deprecating banter. Welcome to the site!

Hey RyD22,
Fanny is a film about a girl who was forced to have an abortion by her father. And since this forced abortion she’s been living her life in a cycle (I guess you could say she got ocd). I wanted to make a film which explored the way people treat one another like shit and I though the best way to do this is within the family home. But yeah this didn’t quite work out the way I wanted to, and I failed miserably. I guess you could label it art house, but I prefer the label “shit” because I failed at telling a coherent story. I’ll be doing my next film soonish, and hopefully that one will make sense. If not I shall retake my g.c.s.es and become a butcher, "10 sausages for a pound me dear!"

i agree with hyde, the thing the stands out for me is the way it is shot, you have gained some good knowledge at film school thats for sure, i have just got the book the guerilla film makers handbook which is apparently better than going to any film school, i'll let you know in two years time after i read it. ps was the newspaper the guy was reading upside down for a reason?

ps was the newspaper the guy was reading upside down for a reason? To be 'weird' perhaps? Like how many bits are played backwards. Just being cynical! ;D
