Ryd read the debate in one of the links I posted above it pretty much tells you the difference in mono and stereo and what works best for what. I think the kind of mic we want from reading it is the mono option.

Hmmm i do want it for voice now... but the stereo mic seems much more versatile! May use it for other things as well as voice you see. Might the stereo be the best option as an all-rounder? Its just the stereo is much cheaper on ebay, comes with a windsock too! Which i'd have to buy separately with the mono. Not that i need one now, but i may well do in the future. :S confused, dunno what to do!! Anyone? It ends in 40 mins! (its 21.53 now)

Hi Ryd, I THINK this is the main difference between stereo and mono
Stereo mic-pics up the whole environment around you so say you were recording a band play live, or a wedding or like a nature program where you wanted to hear all the surrounding noises as well as the the person speaking.
Mono mic- pics up the source its next to so say you had the mic on a boompole above the actors just out of shot it picks up just there voices and not anything else around the room.
I think that mic your bidding on is the one now at £65 plus £10 p&P. If you wanna go mono I found the Rode Videomic (mono) for best price £63

looking at the stereo mono debate you always aim to capture sound as clear as possible so its definatly all about using mono mikes

for speech always go for mono, don't worry about any enviroment noise as you can use foley sound for this by either recording wild tracks or using sound effects, don't even try to get sound as good as movies or even tv as the dialogue is usually ADR'd in post (automated dialogue replacement) i use a rode ntg 2 at the mo as its all i could afford but it is serving me well but it uses xlr inputs.

I don't know much about sound, but I would presume that mono was best for dialogue, and as Wiggy says, you can record the environment in stereo seperately and add it later.
Back to dialogue... think about scenes in films where you have a discussion between two or more people and the camera view changes back and forth. With a stereo mic, the voice would leap from left to right (or vice versa) when you cut to the reverse angle of the conversation. You simply don't ever have that in film or TV because it would be very distracting. With mono, the voice is always central no matter what angle the cam is shooting.
Does that make sense? It does in my head!

yeah exactly dave, then add ontop of that folly and atmos tracks and your head would explode!
the more I think about it I'd be seriously surprised if stereo mikes were ever used in film because everything a stereo mic can achieve can be done under control in post

You swines!
All this talk of a cheap microphone that gets ace results has got me itching to buy it too... even though I can't see any definite time I get to use it!
Hmmmm I bet it's good for doing Weston-Super-Mare tourist video voice overs though! ;D

Pah the Mic is in stock but I've just had an email saying I will have to wait for the other bits including the boom pole. I'm sure you could come up with a great character driven film Dave. The only drawback in this area I find is where are all the bloody actors? ??
