im starting to save up for a new video camera and i remembered that i have one of these - Sankyo 8-cm Micro Zoom my Grandma gave it me along with a projector screen and also another camera which i forget the name of but its another similar to this 8mm one and i was wondering the possibilities of using a camera like this for filmmaking today and if its worth the effort getting it working (i think it just needs a new mercury battery) and the method of transferring film to digital the type of camera i want is going to be in the thousands of pounds area so i thought hey - ive got this, is it possible to use it!?

8mm cameras are amazing! But you're talking about £20 for every ten minutes of film you shoot and process. You'll also have to record separate sound, but the look will be like nothing else you've seen. Grainy but gorgeous.
Transfer to digital can be done by mail order, but I know some people set up the projector and then use a miniDV camera to capture the image. It's pretty basic, but you can get great results. And all there to upload to the computer without the fuss of waiting for it to come back.
I wanted to shoot an entire feature film in 8mm, but it would have been very stylized.
Definitely do your research, but I reckon it's worth a punt. And everything would look beautiful through it.

Hello mate, looks like Dave has moved your post into the film-making forum for you! How very kind of him. Wow! You have a Super-8 camera mate! They're awesome! Is it possible to use it?! Yes it certainly is! Its worth getting it working mate. Loads of people are making super-8 films these days, its gone through a bit of a revolution. there was a thread on Super 8 cameras not long ago in here, you might wanna look it up. You can get your footage transferred to digital at a cost i think. You gotta send it off somewhere. When i see my grandma next i'm gonna see if she has one of these... I'm sure she has as my uncle mentioned it the other day... i want it!! I'm currently helping out, and will be volunteering for a Super8 film festival: www.cambridge-super8.org/ You should come along to see what can be done!! more links: homepage.mac.com/onsuper8/www.todd-ao.co.uk/

Todd AO are great to use. They'll sort you out for sure. Talk of London makes me wish I was back down there shooting movies! Now I wonder if my gran has her old cinecamera...

I'd love to buy a super 8 camera, although the sites are a bit confusing. I've emailed a super 8 dealer, seriously thinking about getting one.

With Super 8 if you film in 18 f.p.s. does that give it the more amateur less slick style you get in a lot of super 8 films?

Sweet! No idea what it is, looks like a bargain though.
I just got visions of Warwick Davis using it as an arcade machine.
