Wow, just finished the shoot on tuesday and have only just surfaced from a three day battle with Shimy (Andrew Shim) on Fifa 06. I don't know which was tougher - The Shoot or seeing shimy crying every time Crespo scored another goal!
The shoot was the hardest I have ever worked in my life. We had so many things to fight every day, that at times I didn't know whether we would make it. From nearby Gangland shootings, constant attacks from the firework fraternity and the toils of shooting a period summer film on location for half the budget required with the restrictive hours with which one can work with kids, I found myself worked to within an inch of my life.
The one thing that has got me through all of this is the fact that every time the rushes (previous days scenes on dvd) landed on my mat and I watched them, I was uplifted each and every evening and got the inspiration to go out and give my all to the day ahead. I can truly say that the cast were inspirational to me on this film. Considering the general lack of experience throughout, they were totally professional and amazingly resourceful when it came to adapting to problems. I have never been happier at this stage of a film, ever! And I hope I can do the cast and the amazing crew justice in the edit suite over the coming months.
A special mention must go to Tomo (Shaun in the film) who became the films (and my) own son. To come from the streets of Grimsby having never acted or had any interest in acting and deliver the performance that he has is quite breath-taking. Without going into detail, Tomo has had a lot of tough breaks so far in his life and has so far survived everything life has chucked at him. The fact that he not only survived the toils of a six week shoot (in nearly every scene) but actually delivered one of the best performaces I have ever witnessed is all the proof I need that I must continue to work this way for the rest of my days. No film has given me greater satisfaction - The grey hairs are worth it!
