Hi everyone Just wondering if any other youth cults are portrayed in the film as there was a lot of em about back then,i myself was a casual. Also what problems were encountered filming a period piece? For a start i should imagine the costumes where a nightmare as the early 80's do have a very specific look & also its not that long ago,so if any errors crop up people remember! regards Brunswick

Hi Brunswick, welcome to the site mate. Problems with filming a 1983 period piece were mainly: modern cars, satellite dishes, speed bumps and upvc (plastic) windows. We solved these problems by: hiding entire rows of modern cars by parking period cars at the end of the row nearest the camera. We also got people to move their cars out of shot for the price of a 4pack of stella. We either framed-out satellite dishes, hid them behind period vehicles or had them taken down temporarily by a satellite engineer. Most of the interiors were specifically dressed by the production designer and art department, the biggest job being to turn a modern vegetarian wholefood cafe into a 1983 greasy spoon. You can visit the cafe's website; www.thecrocus.co.uk, or better still, visit the cafe itself and buy some of their brilliant food! Finally, I found an entire area of Nottingham that still had wooden windows in the houses and flats, and we just avoided filming in roads with speed bumps altogether. Hope that answers your question. All the best, Richard (Location Manager on This is England)

Nice one mate Glad to see a lot of trouble has been taken to ensure authenticity!! Being a Sheffield lad hopefully SM & co will make an appearance at 'the showroom' for a Q & A when the film comes out? Got a mate who lives near Nottingham so the next time i see him i'll pay the cafe a visit! Regards Brunswick PS I take it the films set in Nottingham then?

I stayed in Nottingham for a night a couple of years ago and on the morning after we headed down to a cafe just off Mansfield Road (In a dodgy area) called Sonja's Cafe or something. It was radio rental, there was about 4 or 5 girls that worked there who all sung along to a compilation of pop songs unashamably.
Does anyone else know of this cafe?

Not I don't know of it. Is it still there now?
If you are having any back problems though you should go to A. Filshie Osteopaths on Mansfield Road (My sister and her husband own it!!) There is a great sandwich bar on Mansfield Road aswell near the Co-op I think it is.

The Cafe is in the precinct in the Lenton area. Right near the large white flats. You get to it off derby road if ever your passing.

Do you go down there(west st) ? I bit to towny for me. Bumped into an old pal & his brother on eccy rd last Friday,we were reminiscing about a trip to Southend in the late 80's(the brother lived there) can't remember much about it other than everyone seemed to own a porche & liked driving it up & down the sea front!! Do you ever go to the showroom cinema? Regards Brunswick
