Hello all, discovered this by chance tonight and well pleased - been watching since Small Time (a timecoded promo VHS copy is my absolute pride and joy). I run UK based Super 8mm site and mainly make shorts on Super 8mm film - its a pain to do but they look damn great! Hello mate! We've linked to your site a couple of times in the film-making bit of the forum. Some peeps were asking advice on how to get into it. I want to as well, currently trying to track down the family super8 camera!

Welcome to the site.
I am a big fan of Super8 myself and have used it in a number of films, the most recent being Somers Town.
I am the proud owner of a Leicina Special and a Bealieu ZM2, but my dream, is for someone to make a brand new camera so I can use it to shoot sync sound and make a kick ass horror/chiller movie. We need a camera and set of prime lenses to get the best out of the new stocks, HD scanning and digital grading processes, somebody build me one, please!
There is a swedish company (ikoncamera?) who produce compact 16mm cams, that nearly took the plunge and built Double Super 8 camera, but not enough people were interested so it has taken a back seat.
Love your site by the way.
Shane.

Welcome to the site.
Its majorly coincidental that I got my dad to dig out his old Super8 Camera yesterday evening as i wanted to make something using one. My usual camera is a Digital Sony VX2100 so very very different. I'm gonna have a look at your site for more info as I have never had anything to do with Super8 and need to find out like what to do once i have shot film using it.

Just a quick question you might be able to answer. I bought a Ektachrome 64T cartridge. Any idea what kind of footage time duration this would give me? Thanks

About 2mins 40secs at 24 frames per second and 3mins 20 seconds at 18 frames per second. Cheers Giles www.onsuper8.org - resources onsuper8.blogspot.com - news itpc://feeds.feedburner.com/onsuper8films - itunes podcast Everything Super 8 in today's digital world "I don't do any regional accents"

Shane, You're right about cameras I have a Nizo 801 and Canon 814XLS as my main cameras, I've just converted a Canon 514XL-S for widescreen - just about to test it. I heard that there was an Ikonoscop Super 8 version but apparently it was belt driven or something so was unreliable. With the negative stocks that are now available (I'm loving Fuji Eterna Vivid at the moment) the imagery you can get is absolutely superb. Would love to see the stuff for Somers Town, glad you're using it! Anyone else interested in Super 8 film and what it can do should get down to Cambridge 24th to 26th April and see some brilliant short films in the festival. www.cambridge-super8.org/Cheers

I'm in New York that week. I would've loved to have seen some new Super8 movies. On the subject of a new 8mm camera. I wonder whether one of the major 16mm camera companys could create a Double Super 8 magazine to fit on the back of an existing camera system? (ala Bolex?) As much as I love super8, I would love to be able to shoot 10 minute takes. If one of the portable 16mm cameras (the 5 min max capacity type) could be converted, It could make a highly affordable alternative to 16mm (twice the capacity) but with full sync for sound and the use of some amazing primes baby! Plus that unmistakable 8mm look, that no software fakery pokery can recreate. I would design and build one myself if I wasn't such a butter fingered oaf.

I think the sad reality is that unless some madman with a bundle of money sitting around who has a whim we're going to be stuck with what we've got. I've spoken to a bunch of people in LA who use Super 8 for pro film work and TV who manage - but I know what you mean the long take would be really nice and is a hugely limiting factor. Now if someone got the Kodak 200ft cartridge remade - that'd be good and give around 10 minutes no hassle! I'm just thrilled I can get almost any professional motion picture stock I want and stick it in my camera - admittedly at 24fps its only 2 minutes 40 seconds - but its taught me to be really disciplined with my trigger finger for my short films - and shooting single cartridge in-camera edited films makes for even more stress/discipline/fun (see My last short documentary "The Ferryman" got an Honorable Mention Winner at the USA Super 8mm festival back in February which I was well pleased with, all shot non-sync with wild sound and interviews all sorted in post - shot with 7 cartridges of Super 8 colour negative - time consuming but looks great and obviously filmic. Cambridge will be great - and I urge anyone with more than a passing interest to try and get down there as you'll be blown away by the quality of the films and as Shane says - real film without any fakery pokery! There's also going to be an industry panel, which me and some other Super 8 geeks will be sitting on, as well as a bunch of other screenings and events. As for new Super 8 films - check out our podcast on the site - there's nearly 50 new Super 8 films on there now (we usually add one every other week) with everything from pro-music videos to horror and short dramas right through to silent films - real variety. Cheers,

Heya, welcome to the forum, I'm a big fan of Super8, I recently entered Straight8 this year and have also made a few music videos on the format. (I'll upload them shortly...!) I'm a frequent user of your site, it's proved very useful! Thanks alot. I currently own two Canon Auto Zoom 518's and a really battered (but still working...) Sankyo Super CM 300. Thanks to the wonders of Ebay I spent £45.00 on the first Canon, and got the 2nd Canon and the Sankyo for £4.40 the lot!! We're currently working on a quite big project on Super8, I don't know if you'd be interested in taking a look at it, all of the details can be found here... www.myspace.com/theartfilm or www.city-eye.co.uk/ce_news/informationburst.htmlLet us know what you think...
