I don't get what this is about: Wikipedia says its for old-fashioned home movies (I understand a charachter thinking of his/her childhood angle), and some grainy stuff: washed out Saving Private Ryan on the beach footage? But apart from that, why would you want a whole movie looking dated? Not knocking it, just can't get my head round it.

I'd imagine it's a similar thing to people still buying records, Neil. People get into certain qualities that older formats have that the newer ones do.

there was one short I saw one called a dogs tale or something like that about a dog and his owner - the dog narrated, If it had ben shot on any other format it just wouldnt have worked,
edit: here it is!
I just don't think would be anything if it was shot on a anything else!

Anyone else interested in Super 8 film and what it can do should get down to Cambridge 24th to 26th April and see some brilliant short films in the festival. www.cambridge-super8.org/
Dammit! I'm in New York that week. I would've loved to have seen some new Super8 movies.
Shame you can't make it Shane. I'm volunteering for said Festival, gonna be ushering! really looking forward to seeing all the films. Went to a preview night on sunday and saw some excellent ones. In particular a doco about 3 blind women. The sound was them talking about their dreams, and thoughts and way of living, and the images fitted to what they were saying Fascinating and beautiful! All the others were great. Me my gf and friend couldn't stop talking about the films afterwards. anyway i;ve made a thread for the cambs super 8 fest here: shanemeadows.proboards39.com/index.cgi?board=film&action=display&thread=2516lemme know if your coming down!

It's a quality thing, as was said, it could be likened to buying vinyl, as it offers a truly unique image. The grain of the film, can be very rich depending on what stock you use - and the same rules as larger film stocks still apply. Also, there is nothing quite like the buzz you get when shooting on Super8 and you can hear the stock buzzing around inside and knowing that no matter how the shot went, that its done now and recorded forever. It makes you think abit more about what you shoot, and encourages you to embrace what ever happens (good or bad) during that shot/take/ whatever! I bloody love it.

Yup its an aesthetic thing - dont forget I'm shooting with the same stocks that major motion pictures use - there is no issue with grain and the colours are beautiful. You cant get this imagery with digital - but not everyone likes it. Its just a taste thing - not necessarily wanting to get a retro look.

Agreed.
Giles, can you recommend a good telecine service in the UK?
Thanks, Sam,

Balls, just got an email to say sorry we've not been selected for Straight8, that's a shame. I really hoped it would get screened, due to the amount of films they do select...but alas, not.
I'll post it online when I get the film back though, it'd be good to hear what the rest of the forum think of it.

Cambridge was cool - sorry we didnt get to chat Ryd - I was knackered from only getting back from holiday two days before and having driven down from the north early that morning. Some of the films were great and we had a great time and met loads of people in the Super 8 world. The industry panel was fun and we had about 20 or so people turn up to hear me ranting about film! I try and get down for as many as the Cambridge guys events as possible so hopefully see you next time.
I didn't make the Cannes or C4 cut for straight 8 either but have made the long list for London screenings - I knew this already as we cocked our film up with some major technical nonsense at the time!
