What? No Crank? Surprising! Also quite surprised not to see one of Shane's on there.

Nice choices Dave. E.T. though? Really? no. 4? That Koyaanisqatsi looks interesting. I've never heard of it. Not even being born when E.T. was released puts you at a disadvantage! ;D Koyaanisqatsi is great. Just be aware it isn't regular film, just prepare yourself for a 'journey' of vision and sound! How very wanky! haha.... Kayaanisqatsi originated so many visual ideas that were (and continue to be) ripped off by crappy music videos and commercials. When I first watched it, I thought a few bits were a bit too much like a commercial... then I realised that this is where alot of these shots originated.

I saw Koyaanisqatsi a few years back. It's what Bill Nichols refers to as a poetic documentary. There is no real narrative. It's just, what seems to be, a load of beautifully random images mixed with a music score that, when put together, reveals particular themes and notions. The director made two more films like it and together they form a trilogy. There is some extremely beautiful footage throughout.

1. Le Fils/The Son (2002) I've never seen a film that had engrossed me in the lives of the characters as much as this one did. Perhaps it was the documentary-style aesthetics or the low-key yet incredible acting. 2. Heat (1995) Superb acting, arresting visuals. A believable crime drama. 3. Weekend (1967) Godard's Marxist deconstruction of bourgeois values and materialism. Not the most engrossing narrative, but a film full of interesting ideas. 4. Le Cercle Rouge (1970) Austere cinematography and a film so cool without ever claiming to be so. 5. Angel Heart (1987) Mickey Rourke is superb in this, as is De Niro. 6. The Dreamers (2003) Takes me back to a time I really would have loved to have lived in, Paris, 1968. The Dreamers is a film that makes you want to watch films by Samuel Fuller and Nicholas Ray more often! 7. Mouchette (1967) Very bleak; the way I like it. 8. This Is England (2006) Great costumes, a superb script and Stephen Graham make this one of the best British films for years and years. 9. Taxi Driver (1976) There has arguably never been a better lead performance in an American film that Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver (possibly tied with Brando in On the Waterfront). A film of European sensibilities. 10. The Deer Hunter (1978) When I first saw this film, I hated the overlong wedding/hunting sequence. Years later I realised without these scenes, the film would be nowhere near as good.
