I've been thinking about where on earth is the best place for me to screen Donk so the most members can get to a screening, but it is a nightmare because you all live all over the shop. So, I was wondering about the possibility of a secure online screening? I don't know how viable it would be to do this before the release (simply because of the piracy issues etc) but it would solve a lot of problems and if there is a way to make it work it could also be great for screening other little treats, such as old shorts etc. There would have to be a slight cull on the number allowed into this first foray as it was always intended for the more regular users of the sight, but at least it would mean everyone invited would be able to see it without forking out for trains etc. I'm sure the technology is there but I just haven't got a clue where to start though I'm sure some of the boffins at warp would know how to put something like this together. What do you think Dave? Would we send out a link to members for a screening at a particular time etc? Anyhoo, It might be a wank idea or far to risky from the distributors point of view but I thought i'd put it out there.

I don't know much about all that jazz, but it's a good idea if it works.

I don't know much about such an idea, although I think similar things have been done.
On the security front, I think it would be possible to set something up that needs a password, and then everyone who is invited to the online screening gets their own, individual password/security code emailed to them. That way, each code can only be used once. The film could be online for 24hours and it would be up to the invited guests to make sure they made time to watch it.

I don't know enough to really comment but I'd imagine if it was secure enough it'd be really expensive.
I imagine, from the little knowledge I have, that the best way (cheapest, picture/sound quality, secure) would be to allow us to download a file that could only be played once, I'm positive thats possible, and adding to what Dave said everyone would have a separate password.

I just thought of a nice and convoluted method.
YouTube! Now hold on, before you all cry "Don't be stupid".
YouTube can look pretty good if you know what you're doing. The High Quality can be great, and they even do HD now at 1280x720.
But how can you restrict it to certain people? Well....
A new YouTube account could be made, the film uploaded (in ten minute sections though of course) and then the film is set to private. This means nobody can see it unless the account holder allows them to. It won't turn up on YouTube searches for instance. What would need to happen is that anyone invited to watch it would need a YouTube account. Then the account hosting the film adds each person to the list of friends who are allowed to watch the film. It's easy to do.
To make sure the correct people were asking to become friends, there could be a code given out via the Personal Message system on this forum. Each code being different. When asking to be a friend of the YouTube channel with the film, you would have to send a message quoting your code. This would be verified and the user would be added to the friend list and allowed to view the film.
As mentioned, the film would be split into 10 minute sections though.
All sounds a bit dodgy though, even with the described measures in place.

the HD looks better than Vimeo aswell Dave! I think theres a limit to how many people can watch a private vid though???
sounds like an easy solution, mind you if whoevers uploading it has a connection as shit as mine it'll take a week!!!

I thought that even the directors accounts had the limit imposed them a while ago?

Wouldnt it be a bit too risky? Theres loads of sites out there that just need the youtube link (or others) and it will allow you to download the attached film in the best possible format. Not that any of us would mind.
Doing it via Warp would seem the safest way.
Saying that I woulnd't mind hosting the Midlands preview, Leicester - Donk - 32"s - Extravaganza..!

It would be a great idea. You could host it securley and direct the 'invited' people to a specific link on a specific time and date. Only the 'invited' would know where it will be shown and only those with a password could see it. A promise not to try to copy it would be good enough from the more senior forum members wouldn't it? Maybe a contractual user agreement before viewing?
You cold do a premiere and then because of viewer restrictions you could do further screenings for the remaining members. I'm no boffin but that's how I'd guess it might work. Similar to BBC iplayer or streaming like BBC news 24 online.
Great news for overseas fans!
I'd avoid youtube. I know of several sites and programs that can search and strip out any youtube video private or public. it's not really entirely secure but if only trusted members were informed of it's existence then it'd go by undetected by ne'er-do-wells and tinkers. Still quite risky.

Oh yes, I'm well aware of sites and plug-ins that can download stuff from YouTube, but then if you know what you're doing, you can download any media from almost any site. It was the idea that very few people would know the location of the videos that would help. It's probably never going to be a good idea in any format really. Perhaps we should all just wait for E4 to show it. After that, it will unfortunately be all over the net anyway.

Well if Mohamed wont come to the mountain the mountain must come to Mohamed!! I like it!! Come on Dave keep the dream alive!! There must be some way it could be broadcasted over the net without it being nicked? If like said it is streamed through a site for 24 hours only an only trusted members have passes?

You can all come round to my house and watch it in the HD cinema room 30 foot screen.
Well, when I say 30 foot screen I mean white sheet.
And when I say HD I mean projector.
When I say watch, I mean listen, because the projector is broke.
And when I say house I mean garage.
When I say mine, I mean my mum and dads.
And when I say you can come round, I mean you can't.
So see you there.
