ddddyyyy, what would you (or others debating above) suggest is the meaning behind the ghost's name PIPES? Why is giving a ghost or spirit a random name so scary? Imagine if you met a spirit and they told you their name was SHANKS or FLANGE! You'd be shitting yourself.

It's because the family originally thought it was the pipes making noises..... or something similar. When they realised it was a ghosty they named him Pipes!
