I'm a film student doing an essay on Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee, and I've searched everywhere to see if I can find some stats on how well Le Donk did in the brief time it was in cinemas, and how DVD sales are going. Can anyone help me? Am I being totally blind and have missed them somewhere? cheers

Nope.. I can't find any. They usually have it on IMDb but they don't... Erm I'm not being much help here. It didn't do very well in the cinema I worked in for sure.

I made it and I don't know the final amount. It did well in some cinemas and died in others which will lead us shrink to down to the ones that seemed to work if we ever do a similar release again.
We could have made virtually the same sort of figures of half the number of screens from what I have been told. And they are the same offenders film after film. So people that have been getting my films in their city and been going to see them will continue to do so, but the floppyson's will not. People are now starting to hone their releases to the figures geographically and we had the chance to do so on Donk, but I thought it was all bullshit until the predictions came true.
I know it sounds stupid, but you appear much more successful if 10 prints do very well than 60 do ok. It all comes down to screen averages. In our top ten cinemas the screen averages were fantastic and would have got us into some very good industry charts, but the 10 crap ones made the figures look alot worse. So to protect the films chances of getting the best screen average, we will, in the future, hand pick the sites based on past experience.

Shane, would be interested to know where it did well and where it died. Is there, as Ryd suggests, a Midland-North/South divide to this? Thanks.

It's very odd actually. The split is not really a North/South one. Without having the actual figures in front of me it's hard to be precise, but Derby for instance was pretty awful as was Southampton, yet Curzon Soho in London and manchester did great.
Manchester was really amazing as we never went there on the tour and Derby was probably my biggest dissapointment as I was born about 10 miles from there and class it as one of the home towns. Had Bill not done his Q&A there and bolstered the numbers, It could have been even worse.
Nottingham was great as always. ;D
If I get chance, I'll have a closer look at the numbers so I can be more specific.

Gary pointed out this site a while back: The weekend 23rd to 25th Ocotber www.ukfilmcouncil.org.uk/16047That page sees that last mention of Le Donk and it has a total gross of £58,093 at that point. That's the weekend just before the DVD came out on the 26th.

Thanks Shane. The Manc reception doesn't surprise me-despite not promoting the film there. A lot of the stalwarts on the forum have come from that corner of the world; your 'voice' seems to resonate there (E.g. one of my best friends is a Manc and she loves your films). The coolish Derby reception is kind of baffling though.

i'm glad to hear that manchester may have secured some future screenings. there was quite a bit in the local press promoting le donk as I remember, might have had something to do with the fact a large chunk of the film was shot up here as that was mentioned quite a bit. I went on a sunday afternoon about a week after release and the cinema was a good 2/3's full.

That should get us in 'the top million british films about a roady and a rapper who drive around in a camper van' charts. Anyhow, it is still ten grand or so over the budget which most films never recoup so I can't be too downhearted. It's just a shame we didn't have the £120,000 extra we were told we needed to spend on advertising! The biggest thing I learnt on the release of Donk is brave new ideas do about 10% of the work, cash does the rest.

Yeah, but the relationship you have with your fans for work such as Le Donk is : Priceless. As for Derby.. ain't gonna lie, The place has always been begging me to hate it.

Heeeyy I only live here! ;D
Yeah there was about 55 people at the Q&A. 20% of which were friends and family! ;D They all paid BTW. Except for a cousin who drove all the way from York and back again!
Lets hope the DVD is a slow burning type affair. Just keeps on selling. Would make a great Christmas prezzie for the friends and family that you've already bought the box set for.
