I LOVED tonight's episode! Well done, Shane, you're the best! I was so scared your excellent work would be wasted on TV with too many people trying to change the story and the characters but I absolutely LOVE the result... well done Shane!

You know what makes this so good? Having been around in 1986 (still am) this was actually happening - I knew a lad who's (step) dad used to leather him when he was pissed for no reason - I knew a lad who got wrapped up in the right wing and went off on a wobbly with the old NF - I knew a lass who's (step) dad had abused her for years - we had football games that ended up in major barnies with Capri owning 'soul boys', though they weren't as comical, ours were quite serious (getting our scooter run off the road)
The step dad who battered his son got melted by the troops (the coppers never did anything) the abused lass's stepdad also got his come-uppance in a bar by 2 of the crew (not quite so hard when facing 2 large, pissed and leery Scooter Skins) - My point is this - knowing that they had mates who would stick bye them through thick and thin empowered the two who were abused to go to the authorities, press charges and, in the sexual abuse case, see the offender jailed
I feel that Mr. Meadows has made a very realistic, funny, provocative and touching series about friendship, love, lust, loyalty, shame, redemption... too many to list - and I feel that the programme content (and I watched episode 3 through gritted teeth and aching heart) was finely balanced
Any programme that have you laughing one minute (it's sherbet you daft bastard) to feeling angry, sad and vengeful (I know it's not real but it was very powerful, that 5 minutes will always be burned into memory) is a master storyteller at their best
Bravo
** regardless of how popular, how much they beg and offer you money, I hope you don't trundle out dozens of series, TIE 2010 - it'll be like rocky films - Rocky 60, this time it's senility ****

Any film or programme that can change your mood or the way you feel at the time, and play with your emotions, has done it's job properly. Roll on ep 4!

The history of abuse is usually a silent one. Hidden and usually with good reason. a director who touches the subject needs to be many things. But he needs to be responsible, honest and of course careful. What can i say about the last episode of "this is england 86"? The minute this development in the plot surfaced it was handles with extreme sensitivity. the brutal and hideous act was portrayed in a fashion that pushed aside the 'Michael Winner' type voyeurism and went for the aorta. I’m more than a little moved by the way that this was handled. i know this is a t.v. drama and it has to grasp reality and present it in a 'digestible' format. there is a real tendency amongst some directors and film makers to create a scene that has obvious 'shock value', as though that would work. It never does. I really don't want to know why Shane Meadows can handle this subject with such empathy. i only hope it provides many, as it did with me, a sense of catharsis.
The entire series has had wit, charm and grim reality that have flown side by side with a cast of believable characters to create a succinct and finite point. Shane may have used a hammer in the scene to metaphorically drive a point home, but on the whole he is a craftsman who can leave that particular blunt instrument to one side when a point is made... I for one would like to thank him for the past four weeks!

Hello! Apologies for being a little self-referential here, but it is relevant to this thread and the series. I did mean to flag this up before tonight but forgot I co-present an internet radio show called The BakerLee Line on More Than Just Radio every Friday at 9pm. This week's show featured tracks from the This Is England '86 Soundtrack. The show is repeated on Sunday afternoon at 1.30pm if anyone fancies a listen to our little tribute and salute to the greatest TV show of recent years. Follow the link in my signature. Thank you
