Finally locked another episode baby. Me n johnny (editor) put ep 2 to bed late on Friday.
So I will now turn my attention to ep3 for the next 2 weeks as we need all editing complete by the 11th of Nov to give the sound mixers and post production guys at 'The Farm' time to get prepped for the final mix, grade and titles etc.
Very pleased with Ep2, just a final push on 3 then down the hill we roll towards transmission.
I am somehow more excited about this than 86 as I love the fact that we are showing over 3 nights. Feels more of an event somehow.
Anyhow, I'm able to enjoy a weekend off without thinking about the frikkin edit which is nice and I'm off to the cinema in a min with my eldest (3) to watch 'The Lion King 3D' with two of his bezzy mates. Rock on baby!

Ye Dave, I was questioning the bbfc giving it a 'U'. That was a 12 if ever I saw one! My lads gonna be up at 2am screaming over the death of Mufassa.

it'd be great if its something ch4 is looking to do more of drama's running across 3 or 4 nights every month or so would be amazing!

I know the head honchos at channel4 are big fans of 'splitters'. Single drama/film split into parts makes it more of an event and a little easier to digest. TIE88 would run at 2hr40m which is dancing with squirrels territory!
I am not ashamed to say I really love working in TV. The fact that you are judged by the public rather than empire or total film. The fact that it's free and that you are not bound by the 90 minute dog collar of film is all actually quite liberating. Don't get me wrong, I plan to make plenty of Films but if an idea could/should be told over many hours, it is great to know that it can be.
The Tommy SimpsOn story is a film all day long whereas King of the Gypsies could be told over 12 hrs much like the sopranos or madmen such is the breadth of Bartleys insane life. The problem with it has always been what the bloody hell do you leave out!

King of the Gypsies as a series would be unreal!!!
I don't know a thing when it comes to funding or anything when it comes to development etc. but surely these short TV series are looking to be more and more the future for filmmakers, there will always be the cinema but as broadband gets faster things for film are going to have to adjust in the same way things for music had to. I really think powerful short series are our way to give HBO etc. a run for their money.
I can't remember where but I was watching/reading an interview with you the other day and you were saying something like if you were making 24/7 in this day and age you'd probably struggle to get funding, it's maybe an impossible question but what do you think you'd do? would you go the low budget route or knowing what you know now about TV would there be any opportunity there?

I think that interview was referencing more how much harder it is to get a break now to get your first feature off the ground. In 96 when we raised the 1.5 million for 24/7, I bought my first house for 30 grand. That house is worth 200 grand now and the film industry is very ill.
The point being that the 1.5 million then would need to be at least half as much again to make the same film as the world has gone potty price wise and I would probably struggle to get a budget at all (if I was making my first film today) let alone 1.5 million, So the landscape has changed dramatically in the 15 years since I began.
I think I would of found a way through but god knows what I would have made and for who? Maybe porn???

I suppose the answers the same as always if you want to be a filmmaker then find a way and make films it's just hard to know where the goal posts are for filmakers aiming for that break with their first feature when Paddy can win a BAFTA with his short and have an amazing script with great actors on board and still struggle and get half his funding pulled - guess the moral of that is though the film still got made.
As I say I know nothing about funding etc. but with the film industry the way it is and internet viewing getting bigger and bigger these 'splitters' just seem like they could be a way forward and a new set of goal posts, not that I imagine TV funding to be a walk in the park.
EDIT: also going back to your 5 features scheme - 5 nights on CH4 or Film4

That's good to hear Shane. Glad the pressure's off a bit/enough for you to take a day off. Really looking forward to it-not long now! The following comes with the disclaimer that I know nothing about funding films/TV or anything else ;D While film makers who posted on here don't seem to have much love for the film council, when this shady govt talk vaguely about redistributing funds, with no details of when, how and how much, I see a bleak future for UK independent film. Let's hope not, but if it is getting/going to get tougher when it was already tough enough, then film makers will have to find other ways to get their work made and distributed. And as some of the sniffy reaction to Somers Town (advert for Eurostar, sell out, blah, blah, blah...) show, you can't please some of the people any of the time (where do the 'purists' think the wherewithall comes from? The magical film funding fairy?) As somebody who can take or leave most TV, but loves cinema, I obviously want a future where I can go to see my favourite director's work on the big screen. Having said that, if this is not an either/or, but both scenario then I'm happy. Also, maybe there are reasons to be cheerful about TV drama in the future. I can take it or leave it because it does seem to me that TV values, combined with ad breaks dilute the work, but-as Gareth says-on the other hand HBO has been turning our fantastic stuff for over a decade and there's no let up, with many really excellent actors and directors (who don't want to make the next 3D and/or re-make) migrating to the small screen. as The Wire, Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Broadwalk Empire etc show, TV audiences don't have to be treated like dummies with the concentration span of a goldfish. When Channel 4 launched back in the 80s, it showcased some fantastic drama-some of which was later released on DVD as 'film.' And there was other good stuff around too-I bought the Monocled Mutineer (80s Bleasdale/BBC) recently and it still stands up. So, if people like Shane who are hopefully big enough to have a bit of clout, do turn to/turn back to TV, maybe there'll be a bit of a renaissance. Hope so. The three nights/more like three films/'splitter' sounds great to me-and I can buy the DVD later and re-watch without the ads

Great to hear that the eps are coming along nicely. I must say that i was happy enough when i thought it was just going to be a single xmas special...... but 3 1hr episodes certainly was a pleasant suprise!
Just wondering, will there be any references or scenes involving the countdown to, or during Euro 1988. Once again, much like 86 it was before my time, but since im a big holland fan i have spent a lot of time watching some of the matches.
Obvo for this series i suppose you would focus on the absolute failure of england's group campaign.

a bit of a tangent but turns out a good bit of this Ashley Walters drama Top Boy was shot right next to my last flat in Brixton! (if anyones watched it the main kids flat) was exciting to see it!! near the end he's looking at the exact same view we used to look out on when we climbed out on my roof.
as for the TV/ Film thing the internet has changed everything as we know it, it's just not uniformly fast enough yet to deliver HD to every home. In our life time we'll surely we'll see home release be simultaneous with cinema as the industry will have to fold to consumer demand to fight piracy. As TV becomes more on demand surely the lines between HBO type drama and film will blur more and more.

Remember those England football doldrum years? Or 1970 - present day as they're better known >sigh<

The footie chat is being saved for TiE '90/Italia '90, when, you'll recall, we managed to beat Egypt
