I must have seen this half a dozen times since I first saw it. Made me an instant Paddy Considine fan. I actually prefer the alternative ending on the DVD it gives a lot more motive for the guy to kill Richard. Thoughts anyone?

Can't remember exactly why... but I think it lacked the power of the scene thats in the film. Too much was said I think. *MINOR TIE SPOILERS*** However... the deleted bits chopped off the end of TIE... I actually would have liked to see them in. Beautiful photography, Combo in the car... and Tomo and Milky meeting again. Nice stuff. I suppose that look to camera wouldn't have worked as well though...

If I remember rightly the alternative ending was where Richard said he would do awful things etc. I didn't like it because I liked the character of Richard and I don't think that the alternative ending would have sat well with how he was portrayed in the rest of the film. Even with all the events that happened, in my opinion, the character of Richard was one of a nice person ...

***SPOILERS AHEAD*** No, I don't think the alternative ending is as good. Can't remember exactly why... but I think it lacked the power of the scene thats in the film. Too much was said I think. I'm with you guys... I watched that alternate ending just once, and I was so bothered by it. I didn't think it was right for Richard to make Mark WANT to kill him. Richard hadn't totally snuffed out his own humanity but he knew he was getting dangerously close (he recognized and despised what his acts of revenge had turned him into) -- the theatrical ending seemed truer to his character, for him to be so afraid of what he might do next that he can't even articulate it. And it was all the more devastating for Mark to be unwillingly forced to kill someone, and then have to deal with the fallout from when he told his wife about his past; having to live with that much guilt, to my way of thinking, is a worse punishment than anything Richard had done to Sonny and the rest of the gang. (On the other hand, had the film ended with Mark killing Richard as preventive self-defense, I imagine he could still rest easy, and maybe even try to make a case for himself as sort of a hero to his family.)
