Just watched The Life Aquatic the other night and thought it was great, ive been a fan of wes's films since his debut Bottle Rocket. Has anyone else seen his films and what do you think of them? Also what do you think of the style of his films as the life aquatic seemed to push what he does to new levels with him playing a lot with colour and music.
She's my Rushmore, Max.

Ive recently seen the Life Aquatic, and thought its was quite funny and like the different shooting style it seemed to use.
At the same time ive saw the 'Tenunbams' (badly spelt) and i really didnt like it. I dont know why, i really couldnt tell you, i just didnt like it. Since watching it the first time ive watched it about 5 times after but nope, just cant get into it.
But ill give him credit, hes good and quite original (in my eyes anyway)

Im surprized the tennumbaums didnt get you graeme as i found that one of the most emotional of wes's films but i have to say i really wasn't impressed with the life aquatic until i watched it a second time and suddenly i was welling up ( a few beers may have helped me ) but the end bit where he says " i wonderer if he remembers me....." i was crying like a baby. I think if i had to pick Bottle Rocket would have to be my favorite. Does anyone think any comparison to shanes work could be found with some of the new writers/directors from across the pond. i.e. Wes Anderson, P.T. Anderson, Vincent Gallo ect. ?

I've enjoyed all of Wes Anderson's films. Many people and critics dismissed The Royal Tenenbaums, but I really liked it.
Favourite? Would have to be Rushmore, closely followed by Bottle Rocket. I liked The Life Aquatic but IMO, it smacked of him doing a 'Coen brothers' - a film desperately trying to be embraced by the mainstream though I enjoyed it none the less.
Other great US directors to have emerged in the last few years are Alexander Payne, Spike Jonze and Paul Thomas Anderson - none of which have made a bad film, IMO. Payne, in particular is a wonderful filmmaker.

Yeah, i dont know why i couldnt get into 'Tenumbams', i was entertained and i was engrossed so it obviously did the job, but i just oculdnt access it. Some scenes are thought were superb, Paltrow and Luke Wilson in particular. As i said i cant describe why i didnt like it, i just didnt.
I like what ive seen from Gus Van Sant. Recently got Elephant, thought bits of it were absolutely awesome but overall it really didnt understand the point of it. I know what it was, what it was based around, but i dont know what he was trying to say. However, some really unique shots and styles.
And, i cant remember the director's name but he did Spun, also did the music video's for Smack my bitch up by the Progidy. Cant remember. But if Spun is anything to go by im looking forward to some of his stuff too.
What did you think those two films?

I've not seen Spun but have seen Elephant. Elephant left me cold. Van Sant took bis inspiration from a short film of the same name, directed by Alan Clarke.
Clarke's film is maybe 40mins long and centres around secretarian killings in Northern Ireland. There's not stereotypical characters and almost no dialogue. However, it makes it's point in less than half the running time. Definitely worth checking out - it was released as part of the Alan Clarke box set in the US.

What films has alexander payne done? the name rings a bell. I love Gus's films for there overall style and feel i get from them but as for the point i think i miss that sometimes. Elephant was great as was Gerry but as a film with long silent shots i can see how many find them annoying. I haven't seen spun but ive heard good things. Im looking forward to van sants final days or whatever its called based on Cobains suicide and i really want to see the machinist and the jacket both look as mad as a bag of spanners. Adaptation is one of the best films ive seen in a long time and both Spike and kaufman seen to be at the top of their games. I find it strange that most of the people mentioned are drifting to a kind of fantasy world for most of their films as over here it seems the only people doing anything new or original are rooted in real life. I realise i may have just contradicted myself there looking at Gus's films.

Oh yeah one more thing, Barton Fink is one of my favorit films ever. The coen brothers are on an amazing shit streak at the moment and really need to pull something special out of the bag if their ever gonna redeem themselves.

The Coen's are pursuing the mainstream, it's that simple. IMO, they had a flawless record until Intolerable Cruelty. Now, I didn't dislike Intolerable Cruelty nor their Ladykillers remake, but they were no where near the caliber of the other films.
Barton Fink is an absolute gem but I really couldn't pick a fave Coen movie - not when you consider how good Barton Fink, Millers Crossing, Raising Arizona and Big Lebowski.

I liked Garden State - it's not going to set the world on fire but it's a good, solid indie film. Why not rent it?
