Spider is a great film and you’re right, it’s directed by David Cronenberg. As a fan of Cronenberg, it was nice to see him shoot a film in London. Ralph Fiennes turned in a fine performance, deep in nuance. I was astounded that the film was snubbed by the Oscars as it was one of its year’s best.

The Cronenberg films I like the most are all very different from one another: Crash (1996) Dead Ringers (1988) The Fly (1986) The Dead Zone (1983) Videodrome (1982) and my personal favourite. However, some of his earlier, schlocky horror pictures are fun: Scanners (1981) The Brood (1979) Rabid (1978) Shivers (1975) ...and eXistenZ (1999) is worth a watch, too! Of course, his most recent film, A History Of Violence is a must-see

Spider is a wicked film, very understated but brilliantly crafted. Probably one of the most realistic accounts you'll see of true schizophrenia. Weirdly, the book is even more "Cronenberg" than the film, if that makes sense. I wouldn't mind seeing the rumoured deleted scene with the potato at the dinner table

come on harry what is this scene all about, i heard a rumour of a rumour of something strange happening but i have no idea what.
Overall a great great film that doesnt try and glamorize or really explain shitzos (sorry spelling) but just tells a dark story of a deranged boy.

SPOILERS!! (I think)
Well it's the same scene in the book. Once Spider's Dad has got the prozzie moved in, the family are sitting down to dinner. Spider is eating a potato that his dad picked from his infamous allotment. He cuts it open, and blood pisses out everywhere. Apparently Cronenberg thought it looked a bit dodgy and was at odds with the rest of the film so he gave it a swerve.
If you're into your Cronenberg vaginal/guts gore, you should read the book. Some *very* messed-up scenes in there, like when Spider's schlong turns into a fleshy plumber's wrench and he starts pissing baby money-spiders everywhere. There's also a bit about an egg-bag growing in his stomach, so his intestines curl up round his spine and a new anus opens on his scalp (honest to god I ain't making this up!). That's why he's always out in the rain, so he can wash the muck out of his hair.
A very creepy story indeed.

Spider is a great film and novel, but being a big Cronenberg fan I'm biased. I think you can get it for 5.99 on Play.com. From his early days of pure body horror Cronenberg seems to be now concentrating on the horrors of the mind. Must see in no order...
Videodrome Dead Ringers The Brood A History Of Violence Dead Zone Shivers Naked Lunch Spider The Fly
Sod it see em all! ;D

You need to see the recent R1 Special Edition - there's a deleted scene where Brundle put a cat in one teleport and a baboon in the other. Suffice to say, it goes terribly wrong and the resulting hybrid of Monkey/Cat is truly disturbing

I remember screening Cronenberg's Crash when I used to work at the cinema in Bath. We used to grab all the films that the other cinemas in town wouldn't touch with a barge-pole (the cowardly custards!).
I never saw the whole film, but saw bits and pieces of it.... including the "sex with a gaping leg wound" bit!
