mario bava eh? danger diabolik! comp wut was it he did on inferno? i really really want to see his sons film demons! Yeah, Mario Bava did the brilliant DANGER: DIABOLIK, mate. Apparently, Bava supervised the special effects on INFERNO, but legend has it it he directed the 'underwater ballroom scene" - you know the one where the girl drops her keys... DEMONS is okay - it's a fun gore flick, but nothing more. Lamberto Bava never really directed anything that stands out, apart from his debut, MACABRE, which is a bizarre character study in the vein of REPULSION. Bava Jr never really came out of his father's shadow. He never managed to come out of Dario Argento's shadow, neither - he served as second unit director on a lot of his films and Argento produced the DEMONS movies. One Argento associate that did strike out well on his own was Michele Soavi - if you've not seen his mental DELLAMORTE DELLAMORE (aka CEMETERY MAN) you need to pick up the DVD, pronto.

Last night I watched SANTA SANGRE (which is not in the box set). This was my introduction to Jodorowski, as although I've had four or five of his films for the best part of four years, I'd never seen any of them...
SANTA SANGRE is totally nuts and I would recommend it to anyone that loves surrealist cinema. The Anchor Bay UK DVD is great - stunning tansfer - essential when you consider how important the use of colour in the film is. Loads of nice extras too.
