On May 14th Tartan release a box set of Alejandro Jodorowsky's films including El Topo and Holy Mountain. I have never seen any of them but after watching a few trailers on youtube im thinking of buying it. Jodorowsky's films seem to be a mixture of stylish sex, violence, religious imagery and psychedelia im sure Companero has mention El Topo here before but i need to know if anyone has seen any of them and whether they are worth buying?

I've got El Topo on tape from a rare BBC showing from about 12 years ago, it's mental! Jodorowsky's films are unclassifiable IMHO. I'll definatley be getting this set, check out his last film as well Santa Sangre you'll have never seen a serial killer flick ( that's the nearest description I can come up with) like it! Amazing stuff! El Topo was apparently Lennon's faveorite film, it's basically the story of christ shot as a spaghetti western mixed with a heavy dose of philosophy and Magick! Or summet like that, see unclassifiable...

The thing that worries me about curios/art films like this is will i watch it more than once? its the main reason why i never bought the Un Chien Andalou/L'age D'or box set. Style over substance? Maybe comparing Jodorowsky to Dali and Bunuel is a bit of a stretch though!

Maybe comparing Jodorowsky to Dali and Bunuel is a bit of a stretch though! There's plenty of substance mate it just takes some brain power to dig it out, you'll definatley watch them more than once! There's plenty of style to be sure but to me Jodorowsky was trying to do and say something new using Film. The Doc on the Santa Sangre disc is fantastic for moments of "Oh Yea! I get it..." He was supposed to make DUNE in the seventies till it went tit's up, the production drawings by MOBIUS from it are astonishing.

I've had four of Jodo's films on DVD for the past three or so years and still haven't seen them! I've got SANTA SANGRE, EL TOPO, HOLY MOUNTAIN and FANDO AND LIS. Really should get off my arse, find them and watch them.

Im really looking forward to this box set now after watching 'Midnight Movies'(see last movie watched thread) El Topo looks very good. Jodorowsky is a very likable and infectious man. I have always noticed Santa Sangre in the world cinema sections at work but always dismissed it as a cheap euro horror movie probably down to the very gawdy Anchor Bay cover art.

Never dismiss anything as a cheap Euro horror movie, Lee. Cheap Euro horror movies, especially those of the Italian variety, are storming

Thanks Comp ill have a look at that, have you ever used them before? No, but a couple of my mates swear by them. That Jodoroski set is so cheap, I've ordered it, even though I have the films already - apparently, the rights holders have spent $500,000 cleaning the films up and they look amazing, so I figured I sell off my older discs. I also ordered the Mario Bava set (includes five films BLACK SUNDAY, BLACK SABBATH, THE GIRL HO KNEW TOO MUCH and KNIVES OF THE AVENGER). Thiset works out at about £15.00 delivered and is an absolute must.
