Rocktstar's big Christmas hope Grand Theft Auto IV has been delayed until April 2008 at the earliest, the developer has announced.
The game was due to be released this October on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but the firm claims it now needs more time to complete the title.
In an official statement, founder of Rocktstar Games Sam Houser said: "The new consoles are allowing us to create the Grand Theft Auto game we always dreamed about.
"Every aspect of the game and its design has been completely transformed. The game is huge and is pushing the hardware platforms to their absolute limits. The top engineers from Sony and Microsoft are working closely with the team in Edinburgh right now, helping us to fully leverage the power of both platforms.
"As always, our goal is to surpass even the wildest expectations of the game's fans, and to create the ultimate high definition video game experience."
Last month, a games analyst speculated that the game would be delayed to allow the developer to make its financial position look more rosy.

It'll probably work out better for them delaying the release anyway. Inevitably, the price of a PS3 is bound to come down some by then, so there'll be a bigger market.

I've not got a PS3, but I do have "San Andreas" and "Vice City" for PS2... pity that none have come out for the Nintendo DS which I also own, would love to see on that. Don't think me missus well let me have a PS3 - reckons we've enough sh*te in the house - so when it's released, can I come round to one of you lot's house to play it? N.

I'm writing this on my PS3 you know..... because my PC is dead.
It's annoying that GTA4 is delayed but it's going to be worth the wait.

I never do the missions, I just wander round jacking cars and whacking people. All I'm missing is being able to go into all the shops to pinch stuff. Will the new'un do that?

One of the best games ever created The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time was delayed for ages. Worth it? Most definitely.

And me... often seen in VIce City mooching around North Point Mall knocking the sh*t out of everyone with the police baton... less messy than the katana-thingie, but a more solid and satisfying whack! By heck I'm a bloodthirsty git... I also like using the sniper rifle on carparks and knocking people's heads off! And on San Andreas - love the defending the territory stuff - especiallywhen you get an AK 47 - f' real! Word! N.
