Saw that on Empire today - made me spit my drink all over my keyboard.
I like Spielberg; he's made some great films. I don;t dislike Smith, either; his films are goofy fun, for the most part. But with the two conspiring to make this film together, it can only go one way. At least we should be thankful that Big Willy doesn't do theme songs for his films any longer ;D

Without doubt the worst possible remake idea since 'The Wicker Man'. I saw this earlier and had to check the date.

"Jim Oldboy was a man with nothing to lose."
'I've got nothing to lose.'
"Until, one day, something happened, that changed everything!"
'This changes... EEEEEEEEEEVERYTHING!'
And so forth. The Max Payne trailers look really aborted, for what it's worth.

In fairness, Oldboy is absolute shit after that big corridor fight. Perhaps the American writers will improve on the Hentai-quality incest plot.

It just feels to me like they had this great initial idea of the bloke being locked up for so long with no idea why, and some smart fights, then filled in the rest of the storyline with a big pile of arse mud. Action films, for the most part, are a bit like the circus or a fireworks show - they're all about making you go "ooh" and "aah." The talky bits are there for getting your breath back, and are usually very generic and unchallenging. Breaking that mould is admirable, but when you break it with some stupid rubbish about a bloke fancying his own sister or whatever it was, it just ruins the fireworks.

I don't agree in the slightest though.

Call it a crime, but I dont believe I ever saw Karate Kid. But from friends I know about wax on wax off, and Mr.Miyagu (sp?) or something. All I remember is some film about 3 kids who were all ninjas. That was good. Remaking 80's films now?! The 80s wasn't even that long ago! Next it'll be Short Circuit. hang on... they're doing a 3rd one to that I heard... *IMDBs it* not on IMDb but I found this news story on it.. from 2003: www.tlchicken.com/view_story.php?ARTid=1655odd.
