Thought it was looking a bit dead in here... so thought i'd start a thread on something I think about a bit.
So, good sequels are apparently few. But I'd like to know, what sequels you think are better than the originals! and we can all agree/disagree/argue about it for a good old fashioned... well heated discussion!
I'll start... do the film and a brief explanation to why it's better than the first one. Oh and it has to be a sequel.. as in the 2nd in the series, number 2.
Bill & Ted's Bogus Adventure - Death, excellent representations of heaven and hell, funnier than the first one. More fantastic too, as in more fantasy. Fantasy is better than history!
Ghostbusters 2 - More ghosts, thus more awesome effects that I love, Scarier... or at least it was when I was a kid. Louis becomes a Ghostbuster!! Masses and masses of slime and gunge, love that stuff.
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - The best of all 3 if you ask me. Epic unsurpassed battle scenes. ENTS!!
Go on, tell me why I'm wrong, and share your favourite sequels!! ;D

You're wrong on two of those. There's no way in hell Ghostbusters 2 is better than the first film. The Fellowship of the Ring is the best of the LOTR trilogy. Only film I can think of at the moment to contribute to this list is: Evil Dead 2 It perfects the horror/gore/comedy balance, and has some brilliant camera ideas that transcend it's low-budget nature. Oh and it also has a room in which everything starts laughing maniacally (that includes lamps and severed moose heads).

Hey Ryd,
good idea for a thread, but can this just be a thread about sequels/prequels generally?
I only say that 'cause I'm a bit down on sequels.......often made 'cause there's money in it, which often means the original was really good and so is likely to be better than what follows? Goes for most things maybe, including recent films-e.g I think Pirates of the Caribbean I was a good old, rip rollocking, entertaining film (go on, boo if you like) but II was disappointing and III was terrible. And don't get me started on the prequel to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (they killed 'em off in the film...oops.... but that not gonna stop execs trying to make money out of a profitable francise, however gawd damn awful the ensuing film ;D)
Hmmmm, not sure really and will think about it. Maybe there's a case for Godfather II and Back to the Future II-though both are debatable and wouldn't defend either if my life depended on it.
Only one I can think of off hand, that meets your criteria of 'better' umo, is Return of the Pink Panther, Mainly 'cause of this bit of priceless dialogue (unashamedly copied and pasted):
(A beggar sits in front of a bank playing an accordian. There is a monkey sitting next to him as Inspector Clouseau walks up.)
Clouseau: Do you have a license? Beggar: What? Clouseau: City ordinance 147-B prohibits the playing of any musical instrument in a public place for the purpose of commercial enterprize without a proper license. Beggar: I don't understand. Clouseau: It is against the leu for you to play your musical instrument. Beggar: Leu? Clouseau: What? Beggar: You say, it's against the leu? Clouseau: Yes. Unless you have a proper license. Beggar: What kind of license? Clouseau: A license that permits the playing of any musical instrument in a public place for the purpose of commercial enterprize. Beggar: Commercial enterprize? Clouseau: Yes. You play that thing and people give you the muhnay. Beggar: People give the monkey the money. Clouseau: It is the same. Beggar: Oh, no. I am a musician and the monkey is a businessman. He doesn't tell me what to play, and I don't tel him what to do with his money. One day I came home and I found him sitting in my living room. I let him stay, but he pays for his own room and board. Clouseau: Then the minkey's breaking the leu. Beggar: But he doesn't play any musical instrument. Clouseau: City ordinance 132-R prohibits the begging. Beggar: How do you know so much about city ordinances? Clouseau: What sort of stupid question is that? Are you blind? Beggar: Yes. Clouseau: ...Oh, yes, I see, yes...
Not to mention what's going on in the background during this exchange ;D Sorry, bit of a long winded indulgence, but I love this film. Marvellous ;D

I much prefer Ghostbusters 2... most people seem to disagree. Apparently the first one's funnier.. meh. What'd you think is better about the first one? or worse about the second Dave? Just interested. The Fellowship of the Ring is yawnsome... and that giant scene looks crap... CGI Legolas looks god awful. You're wrong Dave. Oh, and thanks for reminding me that I MUST see Evil Dead 2 again!

There's no way in hell Ghostbusters 2 is better than the first film. Too right! The first is a bona fide classic. The second is just a funny cash in. Aliens.Have never got over the view that the first film is fantastic. Right up until after critter has sped off down the corridor leaving a trail of John Hurt behind it. After that... It's... Just... SO... BORRRING!!! I could rip my eyes out. Then about fifteen-ish minutes from the end it gets brilliant again with the best space explosion ever. It's never been bettered. A classic example of less being a whole lot more. Fucking Trek rings. Pah! Aliens on the other hand is just faultless. A perfect movie. Taught, tight, quotable to fuck. Funny and truly quite scary. I remember wetting myself when the Special Edition came out. I thought it was the DBs. All that amazing, and expensive, stuff that was cut out. I watched only this version for years. Then I watched the original theatrical release and the scales fell from by eyes. I could now see why Cameron had done what he'd done. He'd done the right thing the first time around. The Special Edition became nothing more than an interesting curio to me from then on. The original theatrical release is the definitive version. There's a reason for the cutting room floor. And DVD extras... The Wrath Of Khan. I do like the the first one though I know it's flawed. Khan was a much tighter and fun movie. Perfect space battle at the end too.

Time travel and er whales I'll think you'll find young Jill. . I just thought I had waffled on for long enough.

Oow damn, I'm outed as a Trekkie now! Have to say, you've made me revise my first post already 'cause I really like all the Trekke films, except the last one...Undiscovered Country..or whatever it was called..meh...but the others are great!!! The odd thing is that despite loving the 60s series (i'm just digging meself in deeper and deeper now eh), I haven't seen any of the Next Generation stuff.

Oh, and thanks for reminding me that I MUST see Evil Dead 2 again! The film has no inner logic, and just pumps out crowd pleasing moments that make no sense. Like the walking Statue of Liberty and Slimer inexplicably driving a bus. The story and set-pieces are just not as good. The first one is a landmark in film comedies. It is funnier. Here's my most contentious contribution to this list: Jurassic Park: The Lost World It's not really better than the first one, but I would personally rather re-watch the second one. It has the most contrived and unbelievably shite scene in cinematic history! Which makes it a winner!

Shoot, this is an easy one for me... I thought that both The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum were even better than The Bourne Identity -- probably because I somewhat preferred Paul Greengrass' jittery you-are-there direction of the sequels over Doug Liman's more slick and conventional style on the first film.
