Foo Fighters - Reading '95 Oh! That's probably one of mine. I was there getting crushed to death with the best of em! Big top danger! Beastie Boys - Reading '98 Melt Banana - 2001 (and seen them again since, but the first was the eye-opener) The Dillinger Escape Plan - (hmmm seen them 4 times. Probably the one where the lead singer dived into a rack of pint glasses and crunched himself about in the glass a bit. Amongst other things. Everyone of their shows has some madness to behold. ;D ) Mogwai - 2003 - even though I've seen a lot of metalish gigs, Mogwai is still the loudest gig I've ever experienced. Spinal Tap ahoy!

Anyone seen The Clash? i've seen um 14 times (8 times on the White riot tour 77) Met Joe Strummer lots of times. Whoa! Lucky you. ;D I would LOVE to have met Joe sometime... I haven't been to many gigs myself, but the few people I've gone to see are among my very favorite artists. I've seen Bob Dylan twice (once in 2000, and again in 2007 -- Elvis Costello was his co-headliner for that one ), They Might Be Giants twice (in 2004 and 2008), Richard Thompson once (2003), and Jonathan Richman 6 times so far (once in 2001, twice in 2002, once in 2004, and twice in 2008).

In 77 i was lucky enough to spend a few hours getting pissed with Joe and Mick after the Appollo gig at Manchester then we then went with the band on the Tour bus over to Liverpool to catch the following evenings gig. Mick Jones brought me and my mate Sausage and Chips. The tour bus back then was only a 26 seater but with the fans who'd cadged a lift there were over 50 on board. That whole White riot tour was one of my happiest times just listening to Joe talking us through his extream left wing politics was facinating. (I learnt more from Joe in one weekend than all my time at School) RIP JOE A TRUE ENGLISH GENIUS

Best ever gigs, and one worst.
1. The White Stripes (Manchester Roadhouse, 2001) I think it was one of their first gigs on UK soil, and they played at the end of a blazing hot day in August in the modest-sized Roadhouse in front of a sellout crowd of 150. A blistering 2 hour set including the best of De Stijl plus a few new ones (White Blood Cells was only out a couple of weeks prior) had sweat dripping down from the ceiling. You just knew then that they were something else.
2. The Strokes / Moldy Peaches / Mull Historical Society (Manchester Academy 3, 2001) I think I pick this because it simply reminds me of a small music explosion, which has shaped a lot of indie music to date. Shortly before the White Stripes played, The Strokes headlined on the back of simply one stunning single with just two tracks on it. People were going mental for the Strokes' refreshing (at the time) brand of 'crooning punk' and they delivered in style. It was a fairly short set of about 9 songs but they were jawdropping awesome and paved the way for similar bands like The Libertines, Arctic Monkeys and Razorlight.
3. Neil Young (Primavera Sound, Barcelona 2009) Just last than a week ago but simply eclipsed just about any gig I'd ever seen before. Even though it was marketed as a 2 and a half hour set (it clocked in at an hour and 55 mins) we had initial worried that we'd hear a sprinkling of his classic songs, and huge chunks of self-indulgent noodling and new stuff. After the opening, and yes; new, song he left the rest of his vast back catalogue do the talking ripping through some outstanding versions of "Hey Hey hey..", "Down By The River", "Cinnamon Girl", "Needle & The Damage Done" and "Heart Of Gold" along with a load of others. I still get the goosebumps thinking about it so fresh in the mind, with the finale made up of a riproaring (and Lennon-esque) "A Day In The Life" making a great song triumphantly his own.
4. Animal Collective (Primavera Sound, Barcelona 2008) I'd not heard too much of Animal Collective prior to seeing them play a late, but beautiful set at the close of the festival. I'd got Panda Bear's sublime "Person Pitch" LP but I can't even begin to describe the magestic beauty of their live show. All 3 stood in command of their laptops/keyboards/beautiful sound-making equipment, it was like a wonderful fusion of Daft Punk robotic beats and dreamy Beach Boys harmonies, plus an incredible light show to boot.
5. Broken Social Scene (The Irish Centre, Leeds 2006) A midweek gig, over in Leeds where I had to drive and knew I was in work early the next morning to watch a band I'd never heard of. Not the most alluring of propositions but boy, did they make up for it. Listening to them now on record just doesn't do enough justice to what I heard and saw that evening. An incredible band, made up from the pick of Canadian indie bands such as Metric, Stars and Feist, they just provided an aural mishmash of loveliness with layers of trumpets, guitars, drums and singing in an epic 3 hour set. I've sence seen them about 5 times since and not one time for me have they wavered. Not ever. Stunning.
Close but no cigar... Belle & Sebastian (Somerset House, London 2004) Hefner (Acadamy 3, Manchester 2000) The Who plays... Quadrophenia (MEN Arena, Manchester 1995) Portishead / Public Enemy (Primavera Sound, Barcelona 2008) Yo La Tengo / Gorky's Zygotic Mynci (Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, 2004) The Magnetic Fields (Manchester Royal Coolege Of Music, 2004) Super Furry Animals (Tons of times, but specifically the few times at Manchester Academy 1 in 1997, 2001, 2003)
Boo Hiss! The Booby Prize...
Northern Uproar (Queens Park, Heywood 1996) I had to think about this one. I've seen some pretty poor sets; Gay Dad in Liverpool 1998, Crispian Mills playing Kula Shaker songs post-Kula Shaker in 2001 but this one was far shitter. Emerging at the tail end of the Britpop Set, it was a kind of local outdoor gig for these, headlining a park mini-festival. The day started off sunny, as myself and a gang of mates headed over the hill on a bus from Oldham. The band were pretty dreadful, with a huge sudden thunderstorm having just about all their crowd running for cover in a kind of poetic Spinal Tap kind of moment. I think it said it all.
