Very tough to distinguish between 'underated' and 'emerging'.
Aside from that, Paddy Considine should be a household name.

Jeremy Renner (Hurt Locker) and Joseph Gordon Levitt (The Lookout) spring to mind
I would also say Ryan Gosling (well known i know) is a well picked mainstream film away from superstardom

Definitely worth a peep, I enjoyed it alot. A bit hammy to begin with, picks up though and is the first multipart drama that ive watched in flipping ages. If your on Lovefilm you can rent the DVD 180mins, I assume they've cut the ad breaks too (I dont mean the actual adverts, just the stop/starts). I didnt realise it was Hardy in RockNRolla either.

Don't know what it is with me just now, but I can't seem to make my mind up/decide anything....part of the problem with this thread is I'm not sure about the whole 'under rated' thing. Is Harry Dean Stanton 'under rated'? Not sure..........it's much easier to pick 'over rated' actors I suppose.
With that caveat, I've managed to arrive at one choice (for these two threads). I'm going to go for Sissy Spacek in the under rated actress category. Bias on my part because I love Badlands so much, but also because when people are drawing up 'best actress' lists, she never seems to get a look in, but she's been good in everything I've seen her in and amazing in a few things.

Michael Wincott Just has a look about him and one of the coolest voices around, hoarse and raspy. Plays villains very well, but usually just gets smaller parts, but his performances are often memorable as in The Assassination of Richard Nixon. I was looking through my dvd collection and noticed he crops up a few times. Metro, The Crow, Romeo is Bleeding, The Sicilian, Dead Man, Robin Hood Prince of thieves, Strange Days, The Doors, Along Came a Spider. I also like Terence Howard and Tom Sizemore and cant figure out which side of the fence id stick Bill Paxton.

Thomas Jane great in 'The Mist' and 'Stander' but passed off as a pretty boy.
Agree with Michael Wincott too (great voice america's answer to Sean Pertwee)

You answered the first part with the second. I meant a lot of people actually rate him. Does my personal opinion answer the question? OK I'll go with Alan Arkin, but as with HDS I'm not if he is under rated.

Would Harvey Keitel and Tommy Lee Jones be classed as underrated. I mean I know they're respected and all but never classed up there with the big boys which is a shame...

Does my personal opinion answer the question? Yes - like you said, for me someone like HDS is underrated because he's done so much good stuff but never appears in those 'great actor' lists or gets award attention. More so than Alan Arkin who got an oscar for Little Miss Sunshine, though he is great too.
