So the film is finished!
I have no idea how the film plays out, but Gavin's current decision to drop out of the music biz will put a real bitter-sweet spell over the screening I would imagine.

Maybe he's just doin' a Joaquin Phoenix. Hope so anyway. If it' true, Shane's films will definitely miss his music.

Only followed up emails about it yesterday afternoon as I've had my head up my backside with my own work, but went down to the open air screening in the hope of getting in without having put my name on the reservation list. About 5 of us without reservation emails were told to stand at one side and after three quarters of an hour were told we might get in in another hour. This was due to the event being fully subscribed, and they couldn't let in extra people due to Health and Safety regs. Which seemed fair enough, until the five of us standing there like idiots were ignored whilst mates of Warp and their mates, all without reservations, were blithely ushered in instead of this small group of 5 of us. Which was pretty grim and showed a complete lack of respect. And no, I wasn't prepared to blag it. So we sacked it off.
I'll catch up on the film when I can and also one of my other favourite directors, Jonathan Caouette's film, All Tomorrow's Parties. Bit grim as there were people in the queue who didn't even know what films were screening. My OH overheard someone walking in saying "This Is England? Is that the BNP film with the kid who swears a lot?" Rolls eyes. My fault for not booking a reservation but the Warp people should have let those 5 people in. Health and Safety my arse. H & S regs apply to everyone, including mates of mates.
However to finish on a good note, I am thrilled that The Living Room has been finished and am really looking forward to seeing it.

Hi Jude,
Well I'm not too sure about the "mates of mates" thing but I do know that numbers were very tight. The health and safety regs were being stringently imposed by the council and not by Warp. There were a few minor issues with the council in getting the event set up, and the strict numbers thing was one of them.
Several people I know who work very hard for Warp on a regular basis were too late with their reservations and couldn't get in either (due to the numbers thing), so it most definitely wasn't just you!
I didn't go - too busy. Oh well. Will catch all the new films at some point I reckon.

Hi Rich, I realise that it was my own fault for not registering earlier, and that the H & S regs originated with the council, but my OH is a H & S officer and H & S is constantly bandied around as a cover all excuse for anything. If the H & S regs were a reason not to let 5 people in then they should have been a reason not to let others in who were swanning in without reservations. However, it's really a minor grumble, Warp are doing an incredible job and organising those two events was a masterstroke, especially involving Magna and Park Hill Flats - Sheffield is undergoing some criminal decisions regarding demolition and rebuilding the city centre at the moment (the old red brick Sheffield Fire Station is earmarked for demolition soon - a stunning piece of architecture and still perfectly usable. Rupert Wood has set up a facebook group campaigning against its closure here: www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=139775699259 ) And of course what Warp are doing with independent film is brilliant too. This was a very minor hiccup, but one that I ended up ensnared in. And blagging my way in in front of the 3 others who would have been left standing there would have been really cheesy. I guess I was really in the mood for a seamless evening out, having just had my youngest daughter go off to uni for the first time, a sleepover for 9 teenage boys for my son's 14th (irreparable damage - one leather sofa, one illuminated keyboard and one beer festival glass) and a drink with my oldest daughter during which she told me that my idea of achieving success through sheer hard work was completely wrong. In fact, she told me, she was going to be a millionaire in about three years because she's discovered that if you ask the universe for things it gives them to you. So by the time I'd got to Park Hill Flats I was feeling like I deserved a nice evening! So if I come over sounding like a grumpy old grandma, it's because I was!

He he Anyway, I've told the whole world about Warp and me not getting in so there! Oooooonly kidding. I've posted a new blog article entitled "The Power of Music" about Gavin and also about Edwyn Collins. The direct link is here if anyone is interested. judecalverttoulmin.blogspot.com/2009/09/power-of-music.htmlI've included a cracking shot of the Living Room screening (just waiting for a credit for that as I'm not sure who took it.)
