Hello there everyone I have been a member for some time now but I don't tend to post on these boards much, although I do read most post popping on once or twice a week just to see what's happening in Meadows Land. It's been very refreshing to see lots of new posters after England 86 my only fear is like most new posters they seem to post once or twice then give up. I think this could be due to some posters on these boards kind of looking down on the newbie's as kind of jumping onto there exclusive bandwagon. Hope this is not coming across as too aggressive but there is a kind of Middle Class Arty click on here, and the so called Working Class seems to get frowned on. I can't understand why posters on these boards get pissed off when newbie posters ask Shane for parts in his films or how to become extras in his productions. Its natural to think hey I'd love to work on Shanes films so I'll join his forum on his website and try my luck there. Where else would you try? Could we have a section for acting and extra applications maybe this would work? Some times I think some posters on here should remember Mr Meadows himself is a working class guy himself. Shane Meadows is for all sections of our society not just the arty farty middle classes. Just read this back and it does sound aggressive. Sorry but its just what I'm thinking maybe I'm wrong

Oooo hark at the noob! (joke! ;D )
It is definitely something to think about, and some of what you say makes sense.
However....
All new-comers are welcome... everyone even gets a hello in the newcomers section! You don't get that everywhere.
Annoyance rears it's ugly head when newcomers ask to work with Shane as their first post and seem to have no intention in getting involved with any discussions on the board. That's just brazen self-promotion with a disregard for the purpose of the forum. Annoying!
A section for people asking to work with Shane is not something I want to start. It would raise people's hopes, and the reality is that anyone who thinks about it for more than two minutes would realise that Shane is not going to be picking cast members and co-writers from fans on a forum (especially first time posters).
You're on dangerous ground with the accusation of middle-class arty types being the bulk of the posters on this forum. I'm pretty sure that the opposite is true actually.... I'm Exhibit A for starters! How can you judge people to be middle-class? Just because they can spell, and use the English language correctly, while also having an interest in non mainstream films? Seems like some kind of strange preconception of the working class on your part.
Everyone is welcome if they are a fan of Shane's stuff and wish to join in.
Brazen self-promoters and rude persons are not usually looked upon kindly... and I think that should be expected. If a newcomer displays no common courtesy, then they shouldn't expect any themselves.

My dad's a builder and my mum a teaching assistant. We don't live in a council house and I don't even know which social class I'm in and frankly I don't care as I don't judge people on looks, clothes or cars Dave has some valid points there, coming on a website and asking for jobs is not what this place is about. If you want to get involved in films try: www.shootingpeople.orgwww.starnow.comwww.mandy.comShane is not for one minute going to come and pick people off this forum to star in his latest project and why on earth would he.

You're probably middle class, Daz, but you talk like a farmer so it's hard to pin you down into a category. Then the cowboy hats just confuse the issue even further.
I think the reason people post once or twice and don't stick around is simply that this is a site for Meadows nerds/obsessives. A casual This is England viewer or someone who's just been floored by Dead Man's Shoes or whatever might have a google and find the site. They sign up to say they enjoyed it or to ask a particular question about it, but then they might not want to stick around to discuss all the ins and outs of everything to do with Shane's films.
Like if I need advice on something to do with a camera or computer or editing software etc, I'll sign up to a forum populated by people who are really into that technical stuff. I'll make a post asking for help, thank people when they give it, and then that'll be it. No matter how welcoming the members are, I'm probably not going to stick around and become a regular.

Ramaway...
My opinion, and it's just an opinion so don't take it to heart or come looking for me...
First and foremost this is, without doubt the friendliest forum I've seen devoted to discussion of film, besides a Eurocult site where I post and am also involved.
I think the regular posters on here are very friendly and really welcome new members. Anyone that takes a hostile stance with newbies is an idiot as far as I'm concerned. Yes, the veteran members have been on here for years and have huge post counts but it sometimes takes new people to add a fresh perspective and rekindle the flow of conversation.
Secondly, I don't think I've seen any classist behaviour on here - I would imagine that there are a lot of people that are from working class backgrounds and if they're not, who cares? We're all human beings at the end of the day and the fact that we come from different places and walks of life is what makes discussion interesting.
Lastly I will say that I've never thought of people on here acting like the "film elite" types that you see carrying on on the Empire and IMDb forums. Us regular members are just a bunch of guys that have a passion for film.We may not always agree with each other's taste but we don't "attack" anyone for voicing their preferences either.
I think Ramaway has us all wrong and I would like to think that any newbie that makes the effortto join in will soon realise that were a good crowd of decent people.

hi, im a noob on here, only saw three of shanes films so far. i found this by accident while searching something about tie 86. i can honestly say that i found the discussions on here a refreshing change from a lot of forums ive seen. i jumped in and posted and found people here to be brand new with me. i reckon theres more working class people on here than you think, especially in my age group who were skins, scooterists etc back in the day as there seems to be a lot of knowledge about the scenes that were going on back then. this place is cool if your a noob, you just need to jump in to find out.

Ramaway,
I'm not sure whether your post is inspired by newbies generally or the JJ thread. If it is the latter, come on, anybody who posts 'shane meadows is shit' on a Shane Meadows fansite gets what they deserve.
If it's newbies generally, we're a bit better at saying hello these days, but I'm not sure it's anything to do with us. I've been around for a few years and there have only been a handful of occasions when a newbie's got a hostile response and in all cases there were good reasons why this happened. I can't recall a time-not recently anyway-when somebody's posted a honest opinion of something-a film, something in the news, etc and received a snotty put down or been patronised. In fact, one of the reasons I like this site is because the bulk of people on here are decent people who would likely be more hostile to smug people who put down other.
On the gis a job posters, Shane started a thread some time ago ( 'Gaygate' ) which he asks new members to read. In it he says that he's tired of getting requests from people of various kinds and even asked that his pm be turned off to stop it happening. Shane posts on the forum. That's brilliant. Should he be rewarded by having the forum bombarded with gis a job posters?
On arty farty types (me included no doubt), just for the record I grew up in one of the poorest areas of Nottingham. One of the reasons I love Shane's films is because they speak to me directly and remind me of people I know-and because they have a honesty that is rare and special. As I've educated myself more about films generally, I've also come to appreciate his films for other reasons.
I'm certainly middle class these days and since I like books, films, music and art, then I'm 'arty' I suppose. So what? What are you saying? That working class people aren't intelligent? Can't appreciate art and culture? Can't read books?
Just join in for a while-maybe you'll change your mind.

I certainly don't look down on new people joining the board. Far from it .. I hope I can try and say Hello to welcome them onboard.
I'm certainly not an arty farty type .. and my collection of DVD's would make a lot on here cringe .. hahah. Each to their own I say ... arrogance isn't a pretty virtue to have.

Psst .. we'd all quite like to be in one of Shane's films .. I'd be the mad old woman in the background talking to her rabbits. Or Jill and I could be sharing a cup of tea and a few cup cakes and saying "Ey Up" a lot ...

Well i must be the Middle Class Arty Farty one it's gotta be me, no one else wants the tag so i'll claim it.HA HA HA Having said that i came on this site a year or so ago hustling for a job with Shane and i suppose i got a bit of a rough ride from some posters but i think i'm just about excepted now. (Well at least i hope so) As for all that Class rubbish i've never heard so much twaddle in my life. Ramaway listen to the words of Arthur Seaton in the film Saturday Night Sunday Morning. "What ever class they say i am that's what i'm not"
Giz a job Shane i can do that.
Any chance you could name a few of the arty farty crew other than me of course.
