Northern Soul is being screened as part of Brief Encounters' Best Of British line-up at the first ever Signals International Short Film Festival in Colchester next month. If anyone lives nearby and fancies seeing the film with an audience, come on down!
Here's the press release and all that malarkey:
For the first time, the town of Colchester will open its doors to the Signals International Short Film Festival, a showcase of over 170 unforgettable, eclectic short films that promises to be an exciting time for everyone (young and old) attending! Situated just an hour outside London, the Festival also aims to provide a valuable networking centre for both new and experienced filmmakers to share their love of one thing: the art of the short film.
Taking place during 8th-11th September at five venues around Colchester, including the revered Colchester Arts Centre (a beautiful converted church), Signals have worked in conjunction with such respected distributors as Brief Encounters, Rushes and Filmstock as well as popular music labels such as Warp and Ninja Tune to ensure that films of only the highest quality are shown.
Many of the films have won important awards within the industry, not least Andrea Arnold’s Wasp, this year’s recipient of the Academy Award for Best Short Feature. They boast a dazzling array of star talent, including appearances by Ewan McGregor, Ray Winstone and Jack Dee. Also represented are such respected directors as Ken Loach, Shane Meadows (Dead Man’s Shoes), Chris Cunningham, and even a rarely-seen short by none other than Alfred Hitchcock!
As well as these screenings, we are holding workshops in Filmmaking and Animation for people of all ages, taught by a team of friendly, qualified professionals.
From experimental animations to offbeat comedy to hard-hitting documentaries, these innovative films make up for one weekend that anyone who calls themselves a film fan cannot afford to miss.
For a Festival programme outlining full details, please call Signals on 01206 560255 or e-mail festival@signals.org.uk with your name and address. Festival passes can be bought in advance at the Signals office for £15.00 (£10.00 concessions), or alternatively entry to an individual screening cost £3.00 (£2.00 concessions). Youth screenings are free.
