what does everyone think is the greatest ever british film?
the more i see dead mans shoes the more it threatens to topple my choice at number one.
romeo brass is my current number two with twentyfourseven at three, but my number one choice is withnail and i.
withnail is just a superb piece of filmmaking with the best script i have ever read. as a writer i am in complete awe of it.
last summer me and my girlfriend found the actual cottage they stayed in whilst on holiday in cumbria. it is really run down now and took ages to find but it sent shivers down my spine just being there. lots of photos were taken.
does anyone else love withnail? what are others choice for greatest british film?

Tough question. Can't single out one but here's a few of my favourites:
Sapphire (1959) If... (1968) A Clockwork Orange (1971) Don't Look Now (1973) The Long Good Friday (1980)

If were talking good British films what about Peter Mullan as an actor and director. I would put "My Name is Joe" high on my list as one of my favourites. Has anyone seen "Orphans" that film moved me in every direction possible.
My top film is and will always be Romeo Brass but I hope Shane still has something up his sleeve that might change my mind

As much as I admire Mike Hodges, I have to disagree on Croupier. Am I alone in thinking this was yet another case of 'The Emperor's New Clothes.' I just didn't connect with the film, an Clive Owen was as wooden as ever.
Talking of Owen. I watched Closer recently. Not a bad film, though pretentious in parts. However, I can't believe Clive Owen was Oscar nominated for his performance. I've seen hobbie horses give more emotion and range.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned 28 Days Later...I thought that was one of the best British films in ages. I agree with everyone else though - Romeo Brass is the best, followed by DMS. I quite like Nuts in May and Riff Raff too.
Was the first Hellraiser british? That stood out as a horror film. Not that I'm into horror films much.

Another couple of good Brit films were Alicia's Journey with Bob Hoskins and 10 Rillington Place (or something like that) with John Hurt about the Christie murders just after the war.
