Just read a little article about Terry Gilliam. I always look forward to his films... can't wait for Tideland, and my blinkered liking for all things Gilliam even made me enjoy Brothers Grimm (and I was expecting a right load of tat after hearing all the reviews).
Anyway, with threads on the board all about favourite foreign films, and David Cronenberg's filmography (two subject's that I don't mind admitting to be quite ill-informed), I thought I'd start one I can understand.
In the article, Mr Gilliam offers a whimsical opinion on film piracy:
"It's hard for me to worry about the studios losing money. I'm not very sympathetic to their money problems, because they certainly haven't been sympathetic to mine. When you look at one of their accounting sheets you realise you're never going to see a penny, so if someone wants to rip them off that's fine with me. If you're going to pirate, though, make sure the quality's good. Have some respect for what you're pirating!"

Sounds like a proper down to earth guy. He directed '...Holy grail' didnt he? Yes.. well co-directed I think with Terry Jones.... it was the same on Life of Brian too. I recall reading Gilliam's dismay at some of the shots that Mr Jones was directing on Life of Brian. One was the whole 'Biggus Dickus' scene in a big roman temple, where Mr Gilliam was frustrated that Mr Jones hadn't made great use of the fantastically decorative and high ceilings and had instead shot everyhing quite simply..... thus wasting the fantastic location/set as Mr Gilliam saw it. Mr Gilliam loves his high ceilings and bold camera positions!

thats a very interesting view on pirating.. and i agree with it.
i've heard alot about "pirating videos funds terrorists" i dont know if its true or not but i like to beleive its bullshit, thats just scaring people really.
anyway with all this said, i've enever bought a pirate dvd, the quality sucks, my friend got me king kong, but the dude recording it had to cover up the camera from fear of being caught, so its over the camera for some of the first part of the movie. meehh i just buy the dvds when they go cheap, edward scizzorhands for 7 quid for example

Gilliam only directed the opening title animation and the interiors of the spaceship scene Dave, I love Gilliam as well mate. Brazil is in my top ten of all time, I even own the original Cinema poster (which I must get framed someday). Have you read Dark Knights And Holy Fools? A fantastic and informative book on Gilliams career and the films he failed to get made.

A lot of great quality rips surface on the net a few weeks after release in fact this is how I first saw Dead Man's Shoes but I don't agree with people simply downloading movies and just keeping pirate rips or selling them off. If I see a movie in this way and its good I'll go and buy the dvd when its out (have two copies of DMS got the crappy ex-rental first). Never get chance to go to cinema that much now I've got a wife and kids but you have to support the makers in some way else how will they make a profit.
