I just got a MiniDV HD camcorder and the quality is bonkers for the money - its amazing how they jam everything in such a small case!

For those of you that don't know here in the UK Channel 4 are screening four entries from this years straight 8 competition in the 3 minute wonder slot at 7.55pm Monday to Thursday. That in itself is genius - 4 nights of fab Super 8mm films on mainstream telly! But if you're not in the UK its not so good. That's why onsuper8.org has teamed up with straight 8 and Channel 4 to run the films each evening next week out through our podcast; onsuper8.blogspot.com/2008/05/super-8-week-straight-8-channel-4.htmlFor quick links to the films, just follow this link, where they'll all be added night by night! onsuper8.blogspot.com/search/label/3mwEnjoy - we will be!

High Def - Hard Disc Drive... It all well and good but they can suffer from heavy compression to keep the file sizes manageable. An HD frame has approaching 4 times the info in a standard frame so there's some hefty maths going on in those things to squeeze it all in! Saying that HD on MiniDV tape is compressed also - if you want the real deal, spring for one of these (after robbing a bank)... www.red.com/cameras

I just got a Canon HV20 which does HD DV and regular SD - image quality is great, its small and has a big screen (for its size) - has manual control etc. and from what I've shot with it so far seems damn fine for the money! (£560 quid ish)

Nowt wrong with ballsing things up - we got too ambitious with ours - too many edits and that's what got us in a mess as we ended up relying on electronics rather than our own judgement - just learn from it and keep on keeping shooting!

Cambridge was cool - sorry we didnt get to chat Ryd - I was knackered from only getting back from holiday two days before and having driven down from the north early that morning. Some of the films were great and we had a great time and met loads of people in the Super 8 world. The industry panel was fun and we had about 20 or so people turn up to hear me ranting about film! I try and get down for as many as the Cambridge guys events as possible so hopefully see you next time.
I didn't make the Cannes or C4 cut for straight 8 either but have made the long list for London screenings - I knew this already as we cocked our film up with some major technical nonsense at the time!

Correct - its a viewer - allowing to watch the film then edit (by cutting and splicing) as you go - great fun. I dont bother editing in this way now, just telecine all the film to digital then edit on the 'puter.
Cheers

Yup its an aesthetic thing - dont forget I'm shooting with the same stocks that major motion pictures use - there is no issue with grain and the colours are beautiful. You cant get this imagery with digital - but not everyone likes it. Its just a taste thing - not necessarily wanting to get a retro look.

I think the sad reality is that unless some madman with a bundle of money sitting around who has a whim we're going to be stuck with what we've got. I've spoken to a bunch of people in LA who use Super 8 for pro film work and TV who manage - but I know what you mean the long take would be really nice and is a hugely limiting factor. Now if someone got the Kodak 200ft cartridge remade - that'd be good and give around 10 minutes no hassle! I'm just thrilled I can get almost any professional motion picture stock I want and stick it in my camera - admittedly at 24fps its only 2 minutes 40 seconds - but its taught me to be really disciplined with my trigger finger for my short films - and shooting single cartridge in-camera edited films makes for even more stress/discipline/fun (see My last short documentary "The Ferryman" got an Honorable Mention Winner at the USA Super 8mm festival back in February which I was well pleased with, all shot non-sync with wild sound and interviews all sorted in post - shot with 7 cartridges of Super 8 colour negative - time consuming but looks great and obviously filmic. Cambridge will be great - and I urge anyone with more than a passing interest to try and get down there as you'll be blown away by the quality of the films and as Shane says - real film without any fakery pokery! There's also going to be an industry panel, which me and some other Super 8 geeks will be sitting on, as well as a bunch of other screenings and events. As for new Super 8 films - check out our podcast on the site - there's nearly 50 new Super 8 films on there now (we usually add one every other week) with everything from pro-music videos to horror and short dramas right through to silent films - real variety. Cheers,

Shane, You're right about cameras I have a Nizo 801 and Canon 814XLS as my main cameras, I've just converted a Canon 514XL-S for widescreen - just about to test it. I heard that there was an Ikonoscop Super 8 version but apparently it was belt driven or something so was unreliable. With the negative stocks that are now available (I'm loving Fuji Eterna Vivid at the moment) the imagery you can get is absolutely superb. Would love to see the stuff for Somers Town, glad you're using it! Anyone else interested in Super 8 film and what it can do should get down to Cambridge 24th to 26th April and see some brilliant short films in the festival. www.cambridge-super8.org/Cheers
