I wrote the book 'Casuals; football, fighting & fashion' and have often wondered if Shane deliberately 'styles' his characters in jarg casualwear or whether this is an accurate depiction of East Midlands leisure chic - I seem to remember Notts County's mob coming to Old Trafford in the early 80s dressed head to toe in Uwin trackies....all three of em. it's a fine line between fond self-arody and just taking the piss isn't it Goldie Lookin Chain?

answering your own threads - how fuckin sad is that? i take it from the deafening silence that 'strangers aint welcome on this here board' - there was no agenda honest - just wanted to speak to perhaps the one last hope for modern british cinema but you can't win em all folks. see ya.

Shane probably just hasn't seen it. He does tend to answer questions. And I don't think anyone else is well-equipped enough to answer it... Either that, or the Alan Partridge thread has completely taken over their minds.

You're more than welcome to the board brasidas!
I haven't a clue about the shellsuit issues though! I remember the shellsuit and similar garb being worn down in these southern parts in the early nineties. I think all the scare stories of shellsuits being highly flammable and liable to melt and fuse to the skin were the cause of the downfall of that particular 'fashion'.
What happened to those Naff Naff jackets?! ;D

Hey Mr Squirrell, what's the rush. This site has a small but dedicated following, It is not the Walt Disney fansite. Anyone who posts on here, knows that sometimes it takes a while to get a reply from me or the other members.
One of my favourite memories is of seeing whole families in Uttoxeter wandering round in identical Shellsuits (in varying sizes) that they had bought from the adverts in the back of the daily mirror. 6 purple shelly's walking down the precinct towards you was quite something (in the right light of course). It obviously left a lasting impression.

I had a replica umbro england shelly back in the 90's, just like Gazza wore when he put those fake tits on. My Grandma tried to iron it, and that was the end of it. I also was prone to wearing Dready/Spliffy and Karl Kani gear. The older lads were knocking about in Dreamscape and Naff Naff stuff, then puffa jackets and combats hit the big time.

like ODB said - I'm the paranoid n*gga at the party FBI be watchin' me!! - apologies if I sounded y'know 'precious' or demanding. Just thought there is deffo a 'shelly' theme that recurs in various SM fillums - actually although scousers take the rap for the shelly craze infact the scals wore full ski-suits in the mid 80s which were much nicer than the shell suits that came after - once the likes of Hugo Boss got in on the act, it was time to move on. Maybe they hung around Notts for much longer but then again my nan still had one in 1992 and she'd been dead for 7 years at the time.

LOL I had spliffy gear!, looking back at photos I know see what a prat I looked, it just shows you kids will wear anything if their mates are wearing it.

1992? How about 2002! I think if look hard enough round Howitt Crescent (in Uttoxeter) I could still find someone wearing a shellsuit this very morning.

I am sure I would be able to find someone in Nuneaton aswell. Perhaps we should make it our mission then upload photographic evidence on here?

Im just going to drag this thread back up again,
Brasidas, i read your book a while ago, very good. I can see your connection, and by the state of Leicester City centre on a saturday afternoon leisure chic is back, just without need to go abroad to 'fetch' the clothes, thank you allsports for that.
Im new so hi to all aswell, and missdonk, i work in Nuneaton and can confirm the place would go up like a paraffin soaked cat if it encountered a naked flame, shell suit heaven.
