Ive been wanting to make a short film for ages, Im from a musical background and have some ideas I want to get going. My question is what would be the cheapest and best camera for the job (Iknow thats a very long piece of string) The camera needs to be able to be mounted in the passenger seat of a car and monitered. Any ideas ( cost if very important i.e cheap as chips)

well.. first of all i wouldnt use a PC i guess its your choise. i've used a canon MV600i and it always did the trick for me lasted me 2 years and it's just broken which sucks cos i had a new film planned anyway. before that i had a panasonic camera and that was simply bollocks.. wont get into that. i suggest you get a canon, DV camcorder probably retail about 300 squid for an MV800 they are not superb, but they certainly do the trick, my small town film was shot on an MV600i and even if you dont like the look then you can change things in the edit. anyway i recomend canon, even though mine just broke lol lasted 2 years though thats good! also where i work they have dtonnes of cameras used by students all the time, and the only ones that havn't broke are the canons so yeha you see where i'm going with this one. get a cannon and a tripod! ooh.. and a firewire, and for a pc i think they need to have the firewire port put in or somthing? need a firewire port too then. you could even pick up an old canon camera on ebay which would be cheaper

Depends on the age of your PC I guess, because my PC has a firewire socket built in.
I tried capturing from my miniDV cam via USB2.0, but frankly you might as well forget it.. very unreliable.
Firewire works a dream.
I think the newest version of Adobe Premier will only capture via firewire, but older versions allowed other inputs.

Thanks RyD and Dave. RyD I now what your saying about the PC thing I have always been a Mac man, about 9 months ago someone bulit me a PC for my music, it cost less than a G5 dual and goes like a rocket. As far as the cameras go Ive been recomended the Sony VX range, I had a cracking link to a forum on this but cant find it now I know when they where first introduced they cost a bomb but Ive seen a few on Ebay for under a grand. Im not in any rush on this one as I wont have the dough until October so Im keeping an open mind.

I used the XM2 at college and it was a good camera.
I use at the moment the panasonic DVC60, its a nice camera and a Canon XL1.

awesome, xm2 is perfect fr my because i use it for skateboarding as well, the XL1 although alot better, wouldnt be practical for it, plus it costs a bomb! also i just claimed off insurance, cos my old camera broke (canon mv600i, it was my fault, i treated it badley, still a great camera) and i got a brand new sony DCR-HC42e!! although obviously not as good as the XM2 its still dam good, 1 million mega pizels, and like a widescreen lcd, and touch screen. i wouldnt have brought it myself but for free im happy with it, nice little camera. i probably wont use it for much, gonna lend it to my brother alot i think. i've never heard of the panasonic you speak of, but i had a bad experiance with my first camera, which was a panasonic, i love canon, woo. im sure its a good camera though, i may look it up. For now im happy with my XM2 yaay. i still need to send you some shorts dont i salvador? any update on those screenings?
