How do you all manage to get shorts onto your computer from a tape. Like up until now i've been editing my shorts and things while im filming, or with a video player and now im going to start editing on the PC because i've got this new software.
But i was wondering how i go about transferring the footage from a Mini DV tape to my PC? I heard somewhere you get the tape transferred to a disc.

The fact that you are using miniDV tapes means that your miniDV camera should have all the outputs needed to connect to a computer. Dig out the the instructions and the cables that came with it.
It is possible to use USB2.0 connection, but is a lot more temperamental than firewire I find. Check to see what output connections you camera has.... oh and check what input sockets your computer has! Is it a PC or a Mac? Mac's are more likely to have a firewire socket already onboard (although my PC had one when I bought it).. but both PC and Mac should have plenty of USB sockets.
I'm sure you'll soon be enjoying the delights of dropped frames and the wide array of confusing video file formats!

Ok, dug out all the camera wires, still looking for the instructions, good news is i do have a wire that connects my camera to the computer. The camera socket says underneath, DC in 9.5V. And im sure the computer socket is a USB.
Ill look furthur for those instructions but until then, any chance you can gimme a hand from where to go from here dave?

The DC in 9.5v socket is surely where you attach the mains adaptor? It must be. A USB connection should be marked with the three pronged symbol below: See if your camera has a firewire socket though, because I find this connection a lot more reliable. You will need to buy a cable because they rarely come with a camera.. and make sure you have a firewire input on your computer. Firewire is often called i-link (firewire is more Mac terminology) and sockets can be sometimes identified by the logo which is simply a lower case i. If you have a digital camera, take some pics of your sockets and email them to me if you like.

Oh yeah sorry, the camera socket is the USB socket.
I'll set some pics up for you.
I don't think theres a firewire socket on my PC, just USB.

Hi
I use USB to all my computers from my video camera. U should also have a CD with some software on load this first on your computer in case u need it to run. You then on most computers have something called Windows Movie maker its ok for basic starting off software. Go to "file" and down to "capture video" if the camera is all plugged in via USB and your computer recognises it you will be able to capture what you see and then edit it and add some effects make it black and white, etc.
If you still have any problems add me to msn messenger and I'll talk you through it.
