howdy!!! just wondering what programs people use for editing and effects etc. i use premiere pro for all my editing and a nifty little program for special effects called effects lab dv, it can be used for muzzle flashes and explosions etc it is simple to use and very powerfull. i also use final draft for getting scripts into the correct format otherwise people will just disregard them. regards to you all

Hello matey
I only use Sonic Vegas 4.0 as I'm a bit of an amauteur at the moment, I'm not so good on the editing side I'm more of the script and getting the film made guy. Luckily my mate is the opposite and is a bit of a legend on editing even though he only uses Sony Vegas. So we have kind of struck up a partnership called 2B production films as my surnames Barber and his Bayley. In future I will make the films and he will edit them and make them look as good as they can on our super low budget. I have a new script I have written and will hopefully shoot it over the summer and he will edit it, you will then be able to see if we are any good or not lol.
I think I have heard other members of the site mention final cut pro, adobe premier Pro, someone else uses Vegas, thats about all I can recall off the top of my head.

hey wiggy. i use final cut pro HD to edit. and have so far made 2 films with it, and one music video. my other films were edited using iMovie. i havn't had any experiance with any other editing programs, but i've been told premier is very similar to final cut, but with buttons and controlls in different places. I love final cut because i'm a mac user and its perfect for me, i am free to do what i want with it, theres no resitrictions. i use photoshop to edit images and do titles. i havnt used an effects program yet because i havnt needed to. but i hear after effects is good. i checked out some of your film earlier! its very good and funny, and very good effort. i havnt got time to watch it all though, cos i gotta get a dvd done for a couple of my films. so yeah welcome the the forums mate.

I use Final Cut HD too. Previous to that I used Premiere as it is pretty simple and an easy introduction to editing with film. I also use Adobe After effects to add graphical touches to my films.

Guys is Final cut HD just for Apple Macs I'm assuming it is? Whilst we are on the topic of programs, what are people finding is the best way to get the best picture quality? At the moment I only have USB from camera to laptop but I have heard the following things could get better quality not sure what your views are: 1. Connect camera direct to recordable DVD player and record the footage onto DVD and then put the DVD in the computer and use the footage that way? 2. Buy a card that slots in the computer, think it might be like a TV card that has the adapters for your camera to plug into and then capture the video footage through the TV card thingy. I find that when you watch shot footage on the TV it is better picture quality than once you have captured it on the laptop?

i personally use a fire wire to capture my raw footage, then i edit it on my PC and record it back to my camera as it has dv in and out that way i lose none of the quality. i then put said footage back on the PC as one edited dv avi file and put it on DVD through encore DVD. voilla!!! masterpiece dazza i will inform you of that flash web page builder through myspace

I too use firewire. I tried using USB connections for a while, but it caused more tears than joy. Kept getting dropped frames every now and again.... maybe it's because my PC wasn't up to the job. But with firewire on the same PC I can capture footage with confidence! I can also get it back onto my minidv tapes with the DV in/out on my cam.
The idea of recording footage to a recordable DVD player probably isn't a good move. Well in my opinion anyway. This is because you end up with MPEG2 in VOB files (I think) and they are horrendous for editing because of their compression and size. You would have to rip the recorded files from the DVD into another format before editing would be made nice and workable.

Cool Thanks guys.
I think I have DV In and Out on my camera. After what you guys have said i think I'm going to look into the manual and see if what Wiggy and Dave have suggested will work with my camera.
USB I agree is not the best solution I'm not sure I have firewire on my camera I will have to look into this.

"Guys is Final cut HD just for Apple Macs I'm assuming it is? "
yeah final cut is just for macs i'm afraid.
"1. Connect camera direct to recordable DVD player and record the footage onto DVD and then put the DVD in the computer and use the footage that way?"
bad idea, reasons explained by dave above.
"2. Buy a card that slots in the computer, think it might be like a TV card that has the adapters for your camera to plug into and then capture the video footage through the TV card thingy."
know nothing about this! but it sounds bloody complicated and a lot of effort.
and yeah if you have DV IN/OUT then you've got firewire, or iLink as Sony likes to call it. All you need is a firewire card, and port for your computer, unless you allready have one? or you could just get a mac and it all just becomes unblievably simple, but yeah i won't go all steve jobs on your ass.
firewire is the best way dazz, no loss of quality, and realiable, and fast, and most of all simple so i highly reccomend it.

Ryd, What are the advantages of FCP HD as opposed to another version? I know you can't actually edit in HD using it unless you have an HD card and hundreds of Gigs of hard drive space... So has it just got tons of new features from the previous version?
