Heya,
Has anyone else heard of the Straight 8 film festival which takes place every year in London?
I've just got hold of a Super 8mm camera and would like to have something to aim for as it were, with it.
Has anyone else entered/heard of it? Also does anyone else use super 8??

Not heard of it, or used super 8. We have a similar fest here in Cambridge every year. How much did your super 8 cam set you back? How simple are they to use?

Heya,
There are two 8mm formats, 8mm and Super 8. Super 8 is great, because it's so easy to use! It's what came before video tape, and is celluloid in a plastic case, so theres no need to lace up!
It's pretty easy to use, and not too expensive for a film format. Theres lots of neat in camera effects that are useful. For editiong, when you get your film processed you can pay for a Telecine onto a DV tape or DVD.
Just search on eBay and see what you find. Super 8 is a bit more than 8mm, but totally worth it!

Cheers, thanks very much - I'll let you know how it goes via the filmmaking forum.
Cheers for the heads up about Super8 in Somers Town Shane, any chance you'd be up for selling the camera? I've currently got a Canon, but am interested in learning about other makes of camera.

I think I've seen one called 'a dogs life' or something like that on a Phil Parker script writing course thing, if this comp the one where you have to do the edit in camera?

Thats the comp, sounds quite fun. A good site to go on for both stock and processing is www.widescreen-centre.co.uk/I know Edgar Wright made a film for the comp a while ago with Nick Frost in. Theres a poor quality version of it on youtube, but I can't remember what the film was called!

Hiya Sammo,
I was involved in straight 8 last year. It was a great buzz and the film I was in was selected for Cannes. There is no post production on the films and this all makes for an interesting take. Overall the quality was high and everybody involved loved it. I say go for it!
Neens.

Take a look at www.cinematography.com, there is a super8 forum, search and you should be able to find topics on anything you want to know about super 8mm
