I dont know how i havent found this forum before now, i guess i always go to Shane's site, read about something cool, then shoot off in to the beyond to try find out more....but in any case, i have enjoyed the short films on here (esp Tomt & I - great!) and thought i'd post my own, very much inspired by Mr Meadows and the comic tragedy of 'Northern Soul' etc. I would be grateful for peoples comments on it as its my first attempt at making anything - and dont worry, its not a puerile as the title might suggest....(well maybe it is, judge for yourself!). Just a silly idea based on a word that is frequently used by my mates. revver.com/video/561876/nobhead/hope u like it Cheers, Dan

loved 'nobhead' mate, very ,much in the mould of 'northern soul' and 'the man with no name'. i'm intrigued to know how much of it was scripted and how much improvised cos it seemed pretty naturalistic which is really important for that kind of mocu. keep up the good work!

Only watched the first couple of seconds, will watch the rest later as I've got no sound on... But the skintight jeans already made me laugh!

I too thought it was really good stuff. Nice idea for a subtle sentimental comedy. I thought it was a great little film. Are you a film student?

Very good! It wasn't hilarious, what did make me laugh though was the "D'you think... it might be... because you have a penis on your head?"
Was it all improv then?

Many thanks for the comments guys...maybe i shud get off my arse and send it to some festivals then...I've been watching it so much in editing i have become completely numb to whether its amusing any more, but apparently there are some people out there as childish as me! It was all scripted, but the actor nailed the charactor so well that we just let him go with the flow, thankfully he is a class act and so the natural feel is all down to him. He's been an extra in This is England and Romeo Brass as it goes. if i did a mock doc again tho i would let the actors improvise more as its magic when something u did'nt plan happens. im not a film student, i do study media though at goldsmiths in london, but dont worry, im not a wanker! To be honest the course we did this for was shit so it was really a case of pick up a camera and learn yourself. definatly learnt more off watching Shane's World than listening to the teacher. if you're interested in a bit of heavy rock+horror, ive also done a music vid off my own back which im quite pleased with - revver.com/video/575687/our-man-in-the-bronze-age-music-promo/thanks again for your comments, u've made me wanna make another one now - esp if Gadget likes it!!

Hey Ryd, thanks for the comment....the camera i used was the Panasonic DVX100, its the only one to use in my opinion for that filmic look. I just checked out your youtube, i like twilight harvest...do you cut on final cut pro? how do you get that ghosting effect when we see the masks? cheers

Just watched "Nobhead" - what can I say? Absolutely spot on - the attention to detail is excellent particularly the 'anatomical diagram' and the specialist discussing it. You've got a good actor there too who I reckon plays a good 'comic turn' plus you really do feel sory for - now that's great technique (it works for Ricky Gervais' character in 'The Office'... even though the guys a lol idiot, you DO feel sorry for him at times). All I suggest is that you bung it on 'youtube' also - I'll def. leave you comments for it, and I reckon it'd get more fews! N. P.S. "I haven't got another one you know!" Classic!

I just checked out your youtube, i like twilight harvest...do you cut on final cut pro? how do you get that ghosting effect when we see the masks? cheers Ah yeah, my brother used that camera for his FYP shoot the other day, (i was in acting for it) You have to record onto P2 cards right... 16 mins of footage on each one.. is that right? I currently have a Canon XM2 camera. Bit weary about upgrading to HD, not that i have the money for it anyway. Thanks for checking out my work! I've done about 4 music vids too. Yeah i edit on Final Cut, do you? By "Ghosting" do you mean how white they look? I just played around with the Colour Correction and Brightness & Contrast sliders. And de-saturated the footage of course. Thanks for checking out my stuff mate! ;D

I think you're referring to its big brother, the HVX200...thats the HD version with the P2 cards...the dvx100 is mini DV, just it has a real nice progressive scan 25fps function that makes things look filmic. im not really up on techy stuff too much, i just know this camera rocks! still cant afford one tho, anyway, we'll all have to go HD soon.
by ghosting i mean the kind of dual image effect when we see the masks close up. its a common effect but ive never known how to get it. i call it ghosting as thats what my old handheld DV cam called it as a built in effect, its that slightly offset double image making things look as tho ure on drugs...im guessing the effect could be obtained by duplicating the image on a separate track, dropping the opacity levels and shifting it forward or back a bit, but i wandered if there was a built in filter in FCP?

Ahhh right. Ghosting, I'm with you now! Erm nope, didn't use any effect on my camera... or in FCP. I think it must be the way its been compressed for the internet, as it doesn't seem so ghosty when i watch the Quicktime on my computer! :S Looks better with it too! Ha ha.
As for doing it, the method you suggested would work nicely, I've done it for a music video to good effect. You have more control doing it that way. Probably is an effect though... I've not seen it. Just had a quick look... go filters>video>Stop Motion Blur seems to do it rather well. I think the other method would be better though.
