Please don't immediately dismiss this as a fan simply wanting to 'get in touch' with Shane.
Basically there's talk in Uttoxeter's local newspapers about a film that apparently Shane has always wished to make... one about the King of the Gypsies, Bartley Gorman. We know that Shane wants to make the movie, but recently the papers reckon it could very soon be in the pipeline.
I was just wondering whether this was true? It would be great to see. Thankyou.

Hi... yeah I did see that, I checked to see if any threads related to the project.
But just wondered whether anybody else had heard anything concrete.
Cheers for that!

You referring to the recent post and times article......? (I've tried linking it but couldn't do it - if you go to www.leekpostandtimes.co.uk and search on shane meadows you'll find it marked 'Feb 8th') Doesn't seem to be any new insight - just old quotes really...... If/when this film gets made it would be good to see it filmed in Uttoxeter......although Bartley's gaff up by the golf club is no longer there - replace by a mansion with a heli-pad.... Have you read the book...? Do you know where the mechanics yard in town is that they used to live in? There's a picture in the book and I think the church spire's in the background - just wondered if it was still there...... The Talbot could easily be used for boozing scenes, I think they still have the same decor from the 70's in there......

Thankyou for checking that out for me. Yeah I think he was also building a house on the old A50 just next to McDonalds, right before his death... that lies dormant at the moment. I have read snatches of the book yes, but am not sure about the mechanics yard. The church you're referring to is right in the core of the town. And The Old Talbot... yep it hasn't been modernised at all, it's very traditional in there and I feel it would serve very well in the movie. As they were old quotes I don't want it to seem like I'm wasting your time, but thought you guys may know further about the project. Thanks a lot

Bartley is never far from my thoughts, The King of the Gypsies has led a much talked about but little developed path. I have met and spoke with countless producers, financiers and writers over the years since Bartley death and it never seems to have got off the ground. It is easy to see this as a sign that it may never happen or rather (as I myself beleive) that when the time is right that it will happen.
I have always known that I would need a successfull film under my belt to get the money needed to make what I envisage and doing 'This is England' On such a tight budget and schedule really illuminated how much harder it is to make a period piece on a shoestring. So the reason that things have re-emerged of late is that attention that TIE has received has given us hope (although it is only hope at this stage) that we may have a film with which we could get out to a wider audience.
The press seem behind us, the campaign is looking fantastic and sometimes you get a feeling in your water that things might just go your way. So if TIE can build on the sucess of DMS (even with the slightly palooka 18 rating) we may finally have the foundations to get it off the ground.
I know it's probably foolish to draw comparisons with our hero's, but It kinda feels like a Raging Bull size project to me and those come along once in a lifetime. I want to it to be the best that it can be and I want to do the Gypsies proud by ensuring all Era's covered in the film are authentic. As I'm sure most people are aware, Gypsies have not always lived in the Horse-drawn Bow-Topped caravans that they roll into 'Hearbeat' on and the last thing I want is the next King knocking on my door and knocking my teeth out for making a mockery of their culture. That said, I'm not getting any younger (I'm 34 and a quarter now) and I would love to at least start working on the screenplay this year with a writer so I know we have moved on from this eternal craphole of a first step.
Whenever I go back to Uttoxeter, I see Bartleys unfinished house on the A50. Although it's sad he never finished it, I like the fact that noone else lives there and it is exactly as he left it when he passed away. In some way it keeps him alive for me and if I had the money, I would buy it and leave it exactly as it is.

Sounds really great and very original. Keep us updated Shane plus if you are looking for an experienced but cheap actor for any of the roles let me know. I'd love to audition for you. ;D

Sounds like a great project and something really close to your heart Shane. I'm sure one day this film will get made. Once TIE goes mainstream you will probably have financers queing up to work with you.

Have you started filming this yet? It would be impossible for you to make a mockery of this, you approach things which such a balance of sensitivity and realism. Can't wait, please keep us informed as to the progress. Have just purchased book from Amazon and I am eager to read it over next few days. My dad (when we were kids) used to have to find suitable sites for gypsies to live, and keeping everyone happy (local residents included) was no easy task. I like to keep a comical vision (in my head) of him entering the sites dressed in his (cheap polyester) suit & tie fearful of any 'dags'.............(
