Gordon Bennett! After withdrawing all hope of hitting cannes a while back, Mark (producer) told me that they really wanted to see the film. This news coincided with the film beginning to move ahead of schedule for the first time and we have decided to go down fighting and are working like maniacs to get a cut ready for them to view in London on thursday. If we did make it in (and it is a big if as they only seem to take one british film every decade nowadays) we still wouldn't screen on film in may, but luckily with the help of some digital technology, we could screen from High Definition Tape.
The last time cannes wanted to see one of my films was back in the 90's when i was editing Romeo Brass, we rushed a version to them and they hated it! So I am not cracking open the white lightining just yet. But so much of this film has gone more on fate than logic and I remember Tomo's mum (r.i.p.) saying she would come with us if we got in and I can't help feeling like she has been watching over us this last few months. It would be a great opening for the film and an amazing experience for Tomo who would blow their 'effin socks off.
By the way, The pick-ups have now been edited into the film and they look amazing (even if I do say so mesen!) It really is starting to feel like we are nearing the summit... Finally, Sorry there has been no news on the Tank Album. I have been in the caves for weeks and will get on it as soon as they give me back my liberty. Peace.

What was the deal with the rushed edit of Romeo Brass? Was it as bad as they made out at Cannes? I'm pretty sure I remember an on-set segment on Film 98 (or whatever) and then the film took forever to appear. Seems like it was a bit of an edit marathon that one.
By the sound of how pleased you are with the 3rd cut, and the blubbing from hard-nosed company men that is has caused it doesn't seem you could send Cannes a duff one this time.

Shane, if This Is England fails to get accepted into Cannes, I would take it as a compliment, mate - especially as they rejected Romeo Brass. The new film would be in good company. Cannes as always struck me as the most prentious of film festivals, with many of the films they deem fit for their awards arriving on these shores with little fanfare.

I know what your saying, they do make some pretty 'off-beat' choices and I won't be crying too hard into my cornflakes if we dunna get in. But on the flip side, GMTV are there and I would love to meet Lorraine Kelly. (If I won the Palme Dor, I would almost definatley get on LK-Today. )
Of my work to date, Cannes have rejected, 24-7, Romeo Brass and DMS. the only acceptance I had was for Midlands, can someone figure that little lot out cuz I know I can't! If this track record is anything to go on, then they will turn 'This is England' off after the first ten minutes!

Who is it that assesses the work anyway? Institutional Cannes people? Different people each time? They may have turned DMS down but surely the critical reception after that film would make a difference coming into this 1, and from I can see DMS couldnt have done much better critically ...

I like it - A filmmaker that would rather meet Lorraine Kelly than win the Palme D'or? Genius and you've got to admire that kind of regard for the festival! To me it says "we're more interested in star-fucking" than scheduling challenging or original films - Midlands had a cast of the UK's hottest talent. Truth is, festivals such as Cannes should showcase talent, not celebrities and that's the root of the problem with Cannes, because it's become all about the glitz. The French are quick to dismiss Hollywood and the Oscars but IMO, Cannes is no better. I know a good few people that go to Cannes every year and none of them watch films - it's all about getting into the hottest parties But then again, with that kind of programming, I'd probably give most of the films a miss, too ;D

Saw a truly great US indie film today called 'The Squid and The Whale'. Precision acting all round coupled with a script so witty yet unflinchingly realistic it reminded me of Rossellini at his best. Oh, and it has the best soundtrack of any US film in the last 10 years (you'll find yourself agreeing at the point 'Street Hassle' kicks in). Just thought I'd tell you. Oh, and with a running time of 1hr 20mins it's never boring for a second and, hopefully, reverses the trend in Cinema of everything having to be an 'Extended Director's Cut' with a four hour running time (everyone seems to forget that when David Lean made a DC of 'Lawrence of Arabia' he shortened it by 15 minutes..!)
