The new issue of Empire is out today and, surprise, surprise, a glowing review for THIS IS ENGLAND lies within – Four stars and the verdict:
“Deeply impressive, as both a reaction of ‘80s working-class England and an intimate tale of one childhood’s brutal end”
There’s also a great reference to Stephen Graham’s performance:
“As thin-lipped, bulldoggish boot-boy Combo, Stephen Graham joins Tim Roth and Russell Crowe as actors who have turned what should be purely hateable racist thugs into complex signature performances”.
And on Tommo:
“Then there’s newcomer Thomas Turgoose, who, through intense workshopping, has moulded the character of Shaun through as much his own experience as Meadows’. Pinch-faced and awkward but brimming with prepubescent swagger, he’s the film’s shining core and we’ll be amazed if you see a better, more naturalistic child performance this year”.

I hate Empire, pretentious bollocks. thats why it was such a shame when HOTDOG magazine was pulled. I thought that was head and shoulder the best movie magazine out there. Always did features on the lesser films and independent ones as opposed to blockbuster fodder.

Always did features on the lesser films and independent ones as opposed to blockbuster fodder. EMPIRE has seriously gone down hill in the past three or four years - there's a small group of their younger writers that are intolerable; especially on their forums. Very condescending and elitist. It's a shame because EMPIRE was a GREAT mag - especially in the beginning, through to the late 90s - they had a great run for about ten years. The magazine is dross-like, nowadays, with them giving way too much coverage to the massive films that everyone else is rattling on about. Obviously, they have to do articles on the big films, but they tend to run massive features on a particular "event movie" two or three times. TOTAL FILM is a much better magazine than EMPIRE now - their writers are knowlegeable without being condescending and they try to mix things up a lot better, doing all manner of interesting articles.

Total Film has a fairly large preview of TIE too, and they say some very nice things about it.
