I thought the same thing, the only thing I could think is that its realted to the song by Toots and the mayatals .... I'm sure i'm horribly wrong though

I was going to put up a post about this. Welcome Kubrica! It has to relate to the song doesn't it, and we know(?) that the original song is about a prison number... so is it actually some kind of statement about all the characters being viewed as potential criminals by the general masses? Maybe it's just because it looks good? |

I've been wondering about the numbers too. I only noticed them when seeing TIE the second time.
I thought maybe they where like prisoner's numbers as well. Making a statement that the characters were imprisioned in their lives with no expectation that anything could change for the better?
I suspect we'll all find out in the fullness of time but it's fun to ponder...
