Oh don't get me wrong...I DO like some of Shane's films - I wouldn't be on here otherwise would I? Romeo Brass is my all time favourite film and DMS is right up there too. And I DO want Shane to make more films, but just not films like TIE. It seemed a huge backwards step to me. I don't think we (as in Brits) do films with a social message too well...we always hammer it home. I had hoped TIE would be more subtle or would explore other angles.
You're right - there were some good bits in TIE...I'm not saying it is the worst film of all time! I liked the shop scene where Shaun is lied to about the Doc Martens boots - I can remember being told that the cheap trainers I was getting as a kid were made by Adidas but just had 4 stripes instead! - and most of the scenes with Combo in were good because he had such presence on screen. There was also a shot of a council house with a tree outside and the shadow vanished to show the passing of time...I really liked that. Up there with the bandstand dancing scene from 'Midlands as one of my favourite 'arty' scenes from Shane. The music was great and the attention to detail on the clothing and dreadful girls' haircuts was spot on.
For what it is worth, I came on here to get it all of my chest! Nobody questions why people come on a board to say positive things, so why is it any different the other way around. It's just for expression isn't it? And surely it's better to talk about it on here than to say how disappointed I was on other film boards where my comments might put people off Shane's other wonderful films?

Well ScapeGoat, You're absoutely right about ppl not liking the same things in life seein as fer example my husband an I are complete oppsites an ppl often wonder what we are doing together cause he's "hard" an very set in his way of thinkin an doesn't put up with no shit, where as I'm (as he explains it) Innocent and too sweet for my own good and let ppl walk all over me (But don't get me wrong... I do have a mouth an tend to use it when I feel strongly bout summat)... and us being complete oppsites seems to work fer us, an here you have 2 different ppl with 2 different ways of lookin at things an believing in things, an we both came away from teh movie rather enjoying it, but for different reasons... but that's more off topic... As for your thoughts about wot the movie should of been like, you seem to have some pretty organized opinions on it an maybe if you're that sure that's what ppl would want to see, why not write a screenplay or summat (not exactly sure wot one does to propose a movie to ppl) an give it a shot an see wot comes of it, you never know, ur opinion might jus be right about what viewers want and you get to tell things you're way to boot.... My whole problem is that you picked the movie apart in (at the time when you first posted) an extreamly negative way, and like you've jus said in a later post, you did enjoy some parts of the film, but u neglected to even speak of them and jus went right into ripping the movie to bits... I think that if you're goin to critasize summat the least you can do is have both good an bad points to back up ur argument, but that just might be me then Anyways, that's jus my thoughts on things...

And now it calms down a bit...good!
I can see what you are saying Mysitkal, but you must remember that I wrote my first post no less than 2 hours after seeing the film so my fury was fresh. I've calmed down now and although I'm still disappointed, I'm able to remember a few of the good things and shut the bad from my mind.
I'm actually working on a script for a graphic novel right now - nothing to do with racism or anything, but maybe I will consider that for a theme on something else later on. I'm not too sure people want to see it to be honest...it's been rammed down our throats often enough. I'm sure it needs to be looked at in more detail, especially with the chronic immigration problems we have at the moment with EU membership and the human rights act...but I'm not sure it's for me! All I did with that story idea was try and come up with something positive that I think might have worked - for me - better than the story we got in TIE.
I wonder if that will be an end to the debate?

With regards to the 'throat ramming', that film Crash the other year was an example of a film that I really disliked because of it's heavy handed and 'nothing new' stories. This Is England handled it well I thought, and it added new dimensions to it all.

Yeah, I heard Crash was OTT...I specifically avoided it for that reason. The whole race issue is different in the States anyway.

Different how ? Racism is Racism no matter where you live... it's the same everywhere...

Well, I meant there's different sorts of tension between different groups...not that racism itself is different.

Tell me aboot the tension... there's loads in Montreal around so many different races here that no one gets along anymore... I mean the friggin Sugar Shanties here this year jus got hit cause they accomadated the Jewish Community by changing the pea soup to remove the ham out of it for them... that's friggin low an petty if you ask me, an that's not the worst of it. But I don't think that the fighting between races will ever change
