There have been several inquiries as to whether caning still took place in Britain in 1983.
All I can say is that it definitely took place at our school until 1984, but it didn't just involve canes, it also included trainers, monkey boots and a wooden bat shaped like a fish about 14 inches long 4 inch wide and 1 inch thick.
We actually had a rather sadistic headmaster who took great pleasure in this punishment and had it down to a fine art. He had a collection of at least a dozen canes ranging from a small twitchy one about 12 inch long to one that was half an inch in diameter, and he used to make you choose. Unlike KES we never got it across the hand it was always your arse.
There was even 2 different ways to get the cane normal where the head would just hit away or LAID ON where he would coat the cane with chalk so that after the first hit he had a line to aim at so inflicting more pain.
