You may get a whole load of us arriving at this forum after the South Bank Show and wanting to find out more about the producer and his films to which I am doing. I enjoyed watching the South Bank Show and the films made by Shane Meadows look very interesting. Reading elsewhere someone posted hoping the South Bank Show raises his profile and he gets loads of moolah. Now part of me hopes Hollywood picks him up (and I know you all say hope they don’t as his future films may get dumbed down and not be realistic and have the likes of Tom Cruise playing a skinhead etc.) Why do I say that I hear you say? Because all his films on DVD don’t carry subtitles for the Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Just imagine the scenario, the yanks pick up This Is England and may want to watch all the back catalogue of films and I know it will carry subtitles as they find it hard to understand our accent and I get them delivered here in order to watch them. You guys don’t realise how disappointed and frustrated I am. Why don’t British films carry subtitles? Can you believe that programmes like Peter Kay Phoenix Nights and the Royle Family! Yes I know they are not films, but when shown on TV they carry subtitles, when released on DVD they don’t. In this film, (This is England) from what I read, I can relate to that lad although I was 13 at the time there were skin heads, but luckily for me they would not have understood me. I would have been ripe for getting in the wrong crowd. When all kids were talking about Star Wars in the cinema (I did go and watch it but as you know in them days they don’t carry subtitles) I didn’t understand the film but was amazed at the special effects When at school (I went to a mixed school not a Deaf school) one kid said ‘here comes Chewbacca’ (they said that cos they said deaf people speak like him) red mist came across me and I ended up fighting with a few of them and it spilled out on to the stairs. Upon writing this might give Shane an idea on his next film I could go on but then what’s the point as nothing gets done about it. Like in the film the ethic minorities “are not like us and need to get out of here other wise they get their throat cut”. I am thinking ‘might as well do it to us deaf people while they are at it’ as I don’t feel we are like you.

Fintan, welcome-good to have you here! I really don't have a clue about this (sorry to say), but I suspect that directors/producers don't have too much say about these aspects of the production of DVDs? I suppose that this is something the RNID has to keep pushing. That said, I am sure people on site sympathise with your problem. Sorry if this comes across as a bit lame, but personally I'd gladly sign up to any campaign in the offing to get something done about this.

I'd assumed that the majority of DVDs had subtitles. I reckon they all should to be honest, as it is a shame some people can't watch and enjoy Shane's films.
I doubt Shane Would ever go to Hollywood. But i'm sure he'd be happy to be involved in getting subtitles for his DVDs as jill said, i don't believe directors or producers have a say in how DVDs are produced.

Thanks for all the replys Your correct the Directors don't have a say on this its up to the DVD manufactures but they say its up to the company that makes the films. So its a case of passing the buck really. its all down to money. Was told that it cost £1000 to subtitle EastEnders a lot per half hour programme. But I don't know if that's true or not. Just looked at film four and its showing Dead Mans Shoes so I am looking forward to my first Shane Meadows film. Sort of spoil it a bit having adverts in middle film .. worst case is when they forget to turn subtitles back on after advert which does happen. So fingers crossed it doesn't tonight.

Although the work I am currently producing is unfortunately not feature films; I can vouch that we have an in-house author crew who are responsible for producing the subtitles which arrive from translations/interpretation that they themselves commission. I can not speak on behalf of the translators, but adding subtitles to a DVD is a relatively painless process that either the client or author house can manage...at a cost. The real issue of available subtitles comes from the productions distributor. Only the part of the production team dealing with the distributor will address these issues unless the director is also heavily connected to the distributor, funder, investor, commissioner etc which usually entails he´s the producer also. I have to say that I completely agree that independent or smaller scale distributions (those not connected to major film companies) have to address the issue of subtitles but unfortunately the nature for most of these distributions is they are limited for funds. Budget requirements are paramount and everyone needs to get paid, so this means skipping some of the more extravagant (although in this case, neccesary) features that "blockbuster" have. Obvious i know, but you have to appreciate how hard it is to get the film out there in the first place. I hope that the costing of such requirements is quickly reduced for smaller distributions.

I watched Dead Mans Shoes last night on film 4. Happily to say the subtitles were on and no cock ups.
*SPOILERS Dead Man's Shoes!* The lad who has special needs ( I don't like the word retard) looks Autistic and worryingly looks like my son who is Autistic he is 15. If he was supposed to play an Autistic person he very very spot on!! very good actor. When he hung himself just like my brother did so that was unexpected, glad to have watch this long after he did it. Some films that you watch after 10 minutes you tend to guess right what happens at the end.
My verdict... I knew it be a violent film so in all 10 out of 10 you got your self a fan.

Tobey Kebbell had it nailed didn't he? Ranks alongside Leonardo DiCaprio's amazing performance in Gilbert Grape (yes, folks...just take a minute to remember how stunning that performance from the Titanic boy was ;D) Edit: Fintan, should you edit your post about DMS??? It's a very big spoiler for all the new folk on site who haven't seen it yet? The ending is superb and it would be a shame to spoil it for others

Hi Fintan You have made an excellent point. I didn't know Brit films weren't subtitled. What's all that about? Money I s'pose but it's just not good enough is it? Lets hope Shane sees your "rant" and does something about it! Good luck mate. Where are you in N yorks? I was born in Harrogate and visited Whitby all thru my childhood. Love Zoe

Just sent Fintan an email to tell him that the This Is England DVD has subtitles!
How weird is that?? I'm sure Fintan sent lots of emails to Optimum asking if TIE would be subtitled, and eventually they did reply and said that it wouldn't have any! Very weird.
The TIE DVD even has an audio describe track for the visually impaired too! You don't see that on many DVDs at all.

Love Zoe Hi Zoe, Sorry for slow reply as you can see not many of Shane films subtitled so I don't frequent here. No point in joining in when I have now way of enjoying the film. I live in Kirkbymoorside , 26 miles from Scarborough or York (bang in middle) Whitby is a nice play been there a few times and so is Harrogate. If we ever have the money I would live in Harogate :-)

(yeah ok I wasn't that dramatic just hoping shane will cast me on his next film ) Thanks Dave for sending me an email, I wouldn't have known otherwise, the bloody emails and trouble we have to go through to ask if its going to be subtitled or not! opTITmum only replied when I blogged about this and published the email address as I know other Deaf people are interested to watch it Play.com and other sites dont list if it has subtitles either. So anyway I am made up its on order and the film better be good!!!
