Hi there am enjoying this forum have been a fan of Dead Mans Shoes and This is England which I have enjoyed as they are very real and easy to relate to. Are there any good routes into acting for those who have long term illnesses/disability? Had an opportunity once and became very ill (so would have interrupted a production with in few weeks), but now am on treatment and hope this is the end of a 10 years interruption of my life! ;D Would love to act in one of Shane's movies as I am sure many people would but having an illness which makes some byways harder. However what is the acceptable and correct way of going about this? Have been told that I was quite a good actor a few times but was not encouraged. Years ago a gentle man who was a good observer of life quoted "The whole world a stage every one on it a player" Shakespeare. There are a lot of talented people as I have been using this forum over the last couple of weeks now. We all experience times when a push along the way may be just what is needed. Have edited my post as no one was responding never mind I look forward to hearing from you all soon! Good for the future Shane!

Many thanks for the welcomes, sorry there is no advice so far it is a tough one as there seems few opportunities available, but I look normal, walk o.k but not miles but have low energy so please do not be put off by people with a few difficulties, please! I can appreciate image is important so that everyone blends in to the production. Only did community workshops which went pretty well the bloke running it was from the stage and small film parts. Schemes available are mainly for more profoundly physically disabled, learning disability. I feel very restricted with facilities offered to people who have a few problems. So I think it is who you know, not what you know in my position. Bye the way I am curious how did Richard Gary Stretch (is that the right character the brother) get a part in Dead Man's Shoes some one has experience with casting people with a few problems Obviously the context of the story line was appropriate I realize that! Promise I wouldn't run around with an axe butchering any one! ;D Well as long as it was scripted may be! So come on don't be afraid

Hello and welcome to the forum Sparkuk. Coincidentally, I'm just now reading a book about the cinema of Kusturica (Goran Gocic) which includes a discussion about when/how actors with real illnesses and disabilities feature in his films; frequently and in a variety of roles and places-as in real life- and in contrast to films made in the West. There are a few actors on here, so maybe they'll have some useful advice for you. Hope something opens up for you in the future.

Hi Sparky and welcome. Sorry if I misunderstand your question about the characters and who the actors are. Richard is the main character played by Paddy Considine and the character of his brother Anthony is performed by Toby Kebbell. Gary Stretch is Sonny. Am I right in thinking that your question is about Toby Kebbell and his character of Anthony? Toby is an excellent actor who in Dead Man Shoes plays someone with a disability extremely convincingly. He avoids obvious stereotypes and approaches the characterisation in a very realistic way. I'm sure that if you persevere and keep putting yourself forward, you will be offered parts. Are there any colleges in your area with film students who will be on the look-out for willing people? They often post on the college notice boards. Get involved with film clubs, independent film-makers are always on the look-out for help. I hope this will have been of some help, Paul

I hope this will have been of some help, Paul Yes you are quite correct there I just got a little confused there with cast names I was asking about Toby Kebbel, I was totally bought in to thinking Toby had a learning disability so yes very talented indeed! Although in some way he was an inspiration owing to my misapprehension thinking had difficulties, in a way he still does like so many of Shane's cast members. Many thanks for the advise and will be researching local independent film makers, All advise and welcomes are appreciated! ;D Paul S.
