Hey there. I'm a student at Queen Margaret university, Edinburgh, from Easingwold, near York. My 3rd Year course involves an original work and an adaptation. It goes without saying the adaptation is purely internal to the University.
I'm adapting....guess what...a Shane Meadows film!
Dead Man's Shoes.
In the process of research, I've seen the film about 16 times. And I'm not bored. I hate to sound like an internet fan-boy, but my adaptation for stage will not be a scratch on the film. But my play is going to be somewhat different...
I started this thread to see what folks thought of the idea of DMS on stage, and ideas/concepts for the theatrical medium. (For legal reasons, I reiterate - this is internal and hypothetical......unless Shane really likes it ....)
Comments?

Welcome aboard, Jim, and good luck with your course work! The DMS adaptation sounds like a pretty cool idea.

Hey Salvadore. I'd love to have it performed, but I'm not sure I have the confidence in my writing ability to do it justice. And it would probably be illegal to do so. I have no idea about the legal workings of these things! But here's hoping, regardless.
Thanks for the support.

p.s Hooray for QMU (when it finally gets built!)

**MAJOR SPOILERS**
I thought I'd take the opportunity to clarify my 'vision'. When I first saw the film 2 years ago (without knowing the twist) I thought Richard's reaction was a bit OTT. Then when all is revealed, I started to notice that Richard is only dishing out what Anthony experienced. The emphasis I'm using in my stage version is Richard's motivation. I want my audience to ask: "If Richard is ashamed of his brother, then why is he so hellbent on revenge?"
As my family is effected by disability (my mother has Huntingdon's Disease) it seems a pertinent question. Shane's film posed a personal and painful question to myself and to society itself: Am I defending disabled people to help them, or to help myself? Is Richard avenging his brother because of filial morality or atoning for his own guilt at not trying to understand his brother, or rejecting him for not being as 'normal' as he'd like him to be?
A nasty and difficult question for sure, but I like to write what I know about, so confronting this is a good way for me to come out with effective and confrontational theatre.
And so, unfortunatly, it won't have so many comical moments (i.e the "I love to take him deep so his shaven b***s hit my face" bit in Tuff's flat), but will be a short, sharp (and thoroughly depressing) question raiser.
Although, you never know, there are some funny bits...depends how sick your sense of humour is...
Blah blah blah. Waffle. Blah.

Hey. I've finished my play and had it test read by a couple of scottish actors. It's going well. I was suprised to see how different the characters appeared and the way the story seemed to develop when played by different actors, let alone totally different accents. Very interesting. It's had a good reception which is very nice.
So there we go! Hooray!
