dunno if this'll be helpfull to anyone but I wouldnt have minded this list 3,4 or maybe even 5 years ago, these helped me alot in various ways (mainly writing) anyways:
Yves Lavandier - Writing drama (most thorough book on writing, costs a pretty £££ though)
Phil Parker - The art and science of screenwriting (don't agree with all of it but he's a legend)
RObert Mckee - Story (probably industry standard)
Aristotles poetics for screenwriters (if you buy one screenwriting book get this!)
On Film making - Alexander Mackendrick (cool)
In the blink of an eye - walter murch (alot of stuff about film editing but really teaches everything important (story telling) about editing that can be told) and also shows you how hard it used to be!!!!
anything Stanislavski
writing the short film - pat cooper, ken dancyger
writing short films - linda j cowgill
Save the cat (commercial screenwriting easy read)
Film Directing shot by shot - steven katz (all the basics of blocking and alot more)
and another where they interview scorsese oliver stone cohen brothers etc etc I lost my copy but I'll edit the post when I remember what it was called
love to hear any others anyone can recomend!!?

I've found that, especially with screen writing books, sometimes you can get caught up in the theory (which is a safe warm place) at the expense of doing the practical (which is a scary dark place).
However, I too have a few books that have been useful.
The Writer's Journey - Christopher Vogler
On Writing - Stephen King
The Screenwriter's Bible - David Trottier
Smoking in Bed - Bruce Robinson
Best thing to do is read them, digest them and then sling them on the book shelf and never look at them again 'cos you'll be too busy writing brilliant scripts. (Except Bruce Robinson's book because that's brilliant and not a screenwriting book at all, although he does have some very good advice).

The Guerrilla filmmakers handbook - Chris Jones - Genevieve Jonliffe (Just the most complete guide to film making for anyone interested covers all aspects of film production from preproduction to Distribution) Also contains a CD with tools like Budgets, Contracts, Script formatting software etc.
Digital Film making - Mike Figgis
A neat little pocket guide More Guerrilla than the Guerrilla FMHB - Anecdotal stuff, covering the little things like making sure you're AD's are being nice to people! and really getting to know your camera.

I just rejoined after over a year away from it. What do people think of Shooting People? Is it worth it? Do we sign up because it is the thing to do?

I've only been signed up a week and Ben Blaine commented on the short I uploaded so I think that alone is worth a years subscription, then fact that high profile filmmakers will watch your film and if its good enough help promote it,
Its also a nightmare trying to find crew here in cumbria (moving away soon) but I got an email today from a DOP who lives four miles away! so alls good so far!

Yes i've just joined haven't found huge use for it yet. But it is very good, and im sure i'll make use of it soon. Gonna upload my films to it for a start, its a better place for them than Youtube or Myspace (which i'm cleaning up and sorting out at the moment as well)

If you are going to buy one book on screenwriting buy 'The Devil's Guide to Hollywood'. It's not a tuition on screenwriting but helpful hints and tips, humour and stories of Hollywood lore of how to sell your screenplay in LA and how the system works over there. It's by Joe Ezterhas and it's hilarious. The observations of how nuts LA is are perfectly detailed. He's the guy that wrote Basic Instinct and he got paid £5 million dollars to write a FOUR PAGE OUTLINE. Jesus H Christ.
